Glad I came across this place. I always pass by it while driving down sunset but only recently have I wanted to try it due to a grilled cheese fail on a recent trip to SF. The place I went to was called American Grilled Cheese Kitchen and it was just soso. But I digress. So ordered the muy Caliente (Fontina and Spicy Jack melted on top of sliced jalapenos, fresh cream cheese to bring out the flavor with crunchy tortilla strips on a sourdough bread) and the Tres truffle shuffle (country White Bread, Appenzeller Swiss Cheese, Aged English Chedder, Pointe Reyes Blue and a perfect dash of truffle salt). Both were good. The bread is toasty and greasy like how a good grilled cheese should be. The Muy Caliente wasn't spicy but still good. And the Tres Truffle Shuffle didn't have the perfect dash of truffle salt. It could've used a couple more dashes because you could barely taste it. It was still yummy though. They come with a side salad and a small tomato soup in a sauce cup for dipping. I didn't really need the tomatoe soup since the grilled cheeses were already flavorful but it was a nice touch. Each one was about $11.

Heywood is a unique shop in Silverlake that specializes in Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. I just came in here briefly, and since I was in a rush today, I ended up getting a grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of tomato soup. They do have a unique shop, with only a few tables, but this place has become somewhat of a hipster spot. What's even cooler is that they even have a vegan grilled cheese sandwich. If you are vegan, then I recommend you come by here, however, I don't know if they have paleo bread. They do have unique beverages and funky sodas on sale as well. I recommend you get a fruit flavored bottle soda with your sandwich. Overall, a cool restaurant in Silverlake.

Utterly disappointed. Maybe LA doesn't know good grilled cheese. Being from San Francisco where there is American Grilled Cheese, Heywood pales in comparison. The prices are high, which is surprising considering the location that it's in...it's an up and coming neighborhood, I'm sure rent isn't that high. The grilled cheese was good, but it was small and insignificant. It wasn't filling, and my friend's grilled cheese was also super greasy - which was kind of gross. The plus to Heywood is the side of tomato soup that is provide to dip your sandwich in. The bread used to make the grilled cheese wasn't great either, seemed like ordinary sandwich bread. I like the grilled cheese bread to be thick and dense, so that it soaks up the butter and grills nicely. I am quite shocked by all the star reviews yelpers have given...try American Grilled Cheese in SF people!!

Too bad that it will be closing soon as definitely enjoyed the sandwich and tomato soup.

I'm crazy about their delicious grilled cheeses. I have tried almost very one now! The side of soup for dipping is really fantastic!

Hey wood grilled cheese offers a nice selection of different sandwiches. The venue is set in a dark hipster setting with cool frames and mirror decor. Great place to dine in or grab to go!

Am I lucky or what? Right around the corner of my place is a GRILLED CHEESE restaurant! Man oh man - I really do love coming to this place after a night of drinking and grabbing some food to go. PLUS they are open until super later - like 2AM! My go-to order, is the Muy Caliente and its spicy and very delicious! It's $11, and it comes with tomato soup AAAND a salad! A great deal! I've been visiting this place since they've opened and the only criticsm that I have is that I really wish they would have a rotating monthly sandwich. It would mix things up and would be great! But as I do say that - they have trimmed and added some new sandwichs, The Holy Grail and The Peking Pig! I've had the Holy Grail - its smoked gouda with slow braised short rib and kimchee on our freshly baked brioche bread - but I've yet to try the Peking. Oh and don't forget, you can add Bacon to any sandwich for $2 extra! Highly recommend this place!

Had a Muy Caliente and a Heywood, with Lemonade and Raw Ginger Ale. All excellent. Especially liked the sandwich + tomato soup for dipping + salad combo. Everything tasted fresh, perfectly toasted bread, and the cheese was delicious and gooey and wonderful. The best part though was they brought our dog a cup of water to drink too, without ever being asked to.

At one point while eating my Game Changer ("A unique English double-gloucester grilled into a sourdough bread. A light spread of organic, homemade habanero jam give this purple and gold sandwich a gently kick.")... I exclaimed to my friend, "Good Lord, is this really just cheese and jam????" It was really hard to believe considering the burst of flavors and emotions I was tasting and feeling. The habenaro-raspberry jam took my taste buds to a euphoric state, and the cheese with chives would have been outstanding on its own. Together though... power couple. The tomato soup is the perfect complement to any grilled cheese sandwich, and even the side salad was tasty with a nice dressing. I believe in you, Haywood!

BEST grilled cheese I have ever had! Been here a few times now, and not sure why I have not reviewed them. Their original Heywood is amazing. Simple, to the point, and taste amazing. The small salad and tomato bisque soup is a great pair to dip your sandwich in! The place is a bit small, but it gives that cool, comfortable, boutique style of place; which I enjoy. Granted, this place is a bit pricey, paying around $28 to $35 dollars for two, does not seem too bad - but realizing your just eating grilled cheese makes you think again. BUT definitely worth it, haha

Can I just let everyone know how much I love this place? First off, I should mention that I discovered this little gem because the owner/manager of this restaurant is also involved within the music industry; but, beside the case, this place is almost like a hole-in-the-wall in the Silver Lake in LA--a great, hip little area with lots of budding, independent businesses going around. The ambiance of the shoppe is nice and intimate. It has a woodsy brown warmth to it, making it feel really organic. It's very clean and well-kept. Wide open windows keeps the small space from seeming small. Not too much seating but the seating is just enough if you want to take-out or dine-in. Whenever I have gone, the flow of customers have been pretty steady. It's never to the point where you are waiting forever to order or receive your order, or ever too lonely to feel awkward in the place. It seems to have a steady flow which marks this place as a nice go-to for locals. Now, about the food... It's all you could ask for a grilled cheese sandwich! The menu is nice and simple, offering the right amount of varieties. (I don't think you could go wrong with any.) The portion-sizing and look of the plate is wonderful. It has that nice, hipster-looking feel and is aesthetically pleasing. It's also got the taste to match! The bread is cooked at the right amount of toastiness, and the cheese is enough to ooze out but still keep its composure. Also, since I can be a health freak at times, the side of salad is SO refreshing. I sometimes wish there was more of it, but the entire plate is honestly one of the most-balanced pairings I have ever had. Also to add, the infamous tomato soup dipping sauce is DELICIOUS. The sandwich is good on its own but the soup takes it to another level. Something about its creamy chunkiness meshes well with the sandwich. Overall, the sandwiches are a perfect pairing with the soup and salad. The meal is well-balanced, and the place offers a very welcoming, intimate vibe. They offer free complimentary water, and uphold a nice, young and hip reputation. This place is a charmer--and not just because its owner won me over! ;)

AMAZING GRILLED CHEESE SAMMIES AND THE BEST TOMATO SOUP/ DIP EVER!! Seriously though this place is great. The service is very prompt and attentive, the employees are very friendly, and the quality of the ingredients is obvious. To be honest though the classic is my favorite. Minus one star because parking around here sucks.

Yummy grilled cheese shop, a must for grilled cheese lovers out there! They have a limited menu, but it's all good and worth coming back for when you're in the mood.

Heywood was catered to our office once & I fell in love with the Heywood (A 2 year aged English cheddar with a carmelized onion confit spread onto a sourdough bread) and the Game Changer (A unique English double-gloucester grilled into a sourdough bread. A light spread of organic, homemade habanero jam give this purple and gold sandwich a gently kick) So, I definitely had to make a trip out! In true fatty fashion, we ordered everything we could since my friend and I are both vegetarian/pescetarian. Listed below by order of deliciousness: *Bon Appetite Brie (A triple creme French brie melted into a cinnamon infused raisin bread with an organic fig jam and topped with raspberry sugar crystals.): New Fav! I don't even like Cinnamon Raisin things but loved the balance of sweet & salty *Game Changer: It tasted better when it was catered but again that sweet & salty combo. I'd say the Brie in the Bon Appetite Brie is creamier overall though which I enjoyed *Muy Caliente (Fontina and Spicy Jack melted on top of sliced jalapenos, fresh cream cheese to bring out the flavor with crunchy tortilla strips on a sourdough bread.): Biased because I don't love pepperjack but i like the kick this grilled cheese had to it..and the crunch from the tortilla strips! *Heywood: Trusty Heywood never fails the ones above were just SO good. *Bill Clinton's Epiphany (Vegan cheddar cheese, roasted red peppers and avocado melted into a country white bread that would have been the sandwich that helped our 42nd president be okay with becoming a vegan, had we been open then and through serendipity, he was passing by our shop): If I were vegan, I'd be all about this but I'm not so I prefer the real deal :) You can get half sandwiches! & all sandwiches come with a side of tomato soup (which isn't so great by itself but goes SO well with the grilled cheese) and side salad.

All the grilled cheeses come with a small portion of green salad and a"dipper" size portion of tomato soup. Perfect place to go on a rare rainy day in LA! We ordered the Brie, Peking Pig and the Holy Grail sandwhiches. The sandwhiches were super delicious! I would definitely go back and try just the Heywood or the Vintage. They don't have a huge drink selection and no booze. All of their sandwiches are within the 10 - 14 dollar range. The avocado and tomato salad we ordered was a sizable portion, but very basic.

This spot is good if you are craving a grilled cheese, but some of them are just ok. Maybe a little too rich for my taste. I like the tomato soup though, and that cuts the overdose of cheese grease a little bit. Also, it is open super late, but I would never want a heavy heavy sandwich like this at 2am when I could have a heavy burrito instead:)

Love the food but they closed two hours early for no reason. We watched them lock the doors and upon questioning they replied "it was slow so we closed early" I've worked in food services so I get being frustrated with the crowd...but it's a Thursday night on Sunset blvd, if you say you're open you should be open.

I'd like to make a disclaimer that I'm not a huge cheese fan but I love grilled cheese. I ordered the grilled cheese with the carmelized onions. I'd say it was OK - a little too cheesy for my taste and not enough carmelized onions. I thought it paired well with the tapatio and tomato soup. I probably wouldn't come back because the cheese is too heavy for my taste.

I ate a huge, boring grilled cheese sandwich and paid way too much money for the pleasure. Oh...goody. I'll give props where props are due. The space is super cute, I loved the casual cool space, and service was very friendly. I asked if the tomato soup that day was vegan and was told yes - score! And that's when it starts to unravel. First, there's no indication as to how big the sandwiches are until one is right in front of you. I think the bread was close to 5" x 5", which is huge! Had I known better, I would've gone for the half, because grilled cheese does not make great leftovers. I ordered the "Bill Clinton's Epiphany," which is such an adorable name, but I just wasn't into it. There was too much cheese (and when it comes to non-dairy cheese, there is such a thing) so it took forever to melt. The chef was determined, however, so I got a super melty, very blackened grilled cheese with hot avocado. Ughhhhhh. Even when cooked in a sandwich, avocado should still be a little cool, 'cause that's what makes it awesome. No one likes hot avocado. The red peppers didn't do much to help the situation, either, as it all just tasted like molten lava. Perhaps a red pepper spread would've ensured the sandwich had some flavor, no matter how long it has to cook. The saving grace was the tomato soup. Dipping into the little cup gave my flavorless grilled cheese something to live for. Thank god it was vegan that day. I work in the area, so I might swing by again and give the vegan "Heywood" a chance, but veganizing it makes it the most expensive sandwich on the menu, which seems a little unnecessary. Daiya can't be that much more expensive than Fromage D'affinois! Jeez. I might be back, I might not. My closing thoughts for you are to order the half sandwich unless you haven't eaten all day, grab a root beer, and tell them to go easy on the Daiya, because more isn't always better.

Split the Heywood and the Game Changer with a friend. They were both pretty good, but not good enough to justify paying nearly $30 for them. Yeah, the sandwiches do come with soup and salad but they're tiny portions. The soup tasted like warmed up tomato puree & the salad is just lettuce with some balsamic vinaigrette. (sidenote: the guys working were really nice)

  • Rachel M.

So I've been seriously on the fence about stopping into Heywood. Probably for the same reasons as all the other skeptics--you're shelling out a premium for a food any of us could make, sober or drunk, with limited ingredients. See, if it had been really awesome I would have awarded it 4 stars. And it simply cannot garner 5 because the price is outrageous. The thing is, is that it wasn't really awesome. It was pretty MEH. I ordered the Heywood which is 2 kinds of imported white cheddars and carmelized onions. I believe this was $12. It was extremely decadent and heavy. I felt the pairing of the cheese and the onions sounded good in theory, but the sheer amount of cheese and onion that comes in the sandwich (which is pretty big) was overkill. The saving grace WOULD have been the tiny tomato soup for dipping, but unfortunately that just tasted like watered down marinara sauce. I hear they have vegan and non-vegan soups and they switch off-- might wanna rethink that. All in all I MIGHT go back, but I'd definitely share. The service was sweet and the decor is pretty well conceived. (Oh, no bathroom )

I write this review with a belly so full that I'm slightly nauseas, yet Heywood is still getting five stars. I've been stalking this place on Instagram for months now, so I'm thrilled to be sitting here with a belly full of cheese, bread, and of course...butter. I got the classic Heywood and it was amazing. Unlike most decisions in life, don't think about it, just do it. Hubby got the Peking pig and loved it more than he loves me. But you know what? I'm OK with that, but only for today. In short, this meal was well worth the new dimple on my ass. I look forward to adding another to the collection the next time I'm in LA.

The Heywood is a hidden gem. The night we went, they were open till 3am, so it is a great place to hang out and get some warm, homey grub after a night out. Walking into the place, you're greeted with the aroma of delicious cheese. The square footage of the dining area was enough to seat 4-5 small groups. The service was friendly and prompt. I had the Tres Truffle Shuffle and it felt like I got the sandwich from a far-off country in Europe. The warm and yummy tomato soup and fresh salad really make the meal whole. The Place is easy to find. You can also do take out which is convenient. They Heywood is a must-try. Will def be returning!

You can't really go wrong here - any choice is a good one. The Heywood is a solid choice if you just want a good ol' grilled cheese, kicked up a few notches. Personal favorite right now is the Game Changer. English Gloucester cheese with habenero jam... awesome. The soup and greens are the perfect compliment to any sandwich. Staff is always friendly, and you can tell that they really care about the food. Before coming here, l thought paying 11 bucks for a grilled cheese was insane. But I've seen the light - and its delicious.

I ate here in October and still talking about it in December, so I decided to Yelp about it. There were four of us and we all got different sandwiches. My favorites were the Heywood (with bacon) and the Caprese. The tomato dippin' sauce that comes with is was super good too. The sandwiches are pretty big, but you can also get halfsies. For a guaranteed good time, grab a cupcake next door at Lark.

May we agree that my endeavours now be directed towards matters of Cheese, of toasted Bread, of tomato Soup, of rich flavoured Condiment. Such things are brought from bright Heaven, for the pleasure of us happy living things. Some kind saint must have taken pity on me, for to deliver such diverse glory in one small establishment. Myself & my darling companion ventured here one bleary eyed weekend, as morning struggled into day. Hungover from revelry in certain wretched taverns the previous evening, & craving food that is salty & strong flavoured & in its own way nostalgic for more innocent times, we were drawn to Heywood as the moon is drawn to the earth. Therein we discovered food of such melty deliciousness that it brought my soul to weeping. There are options with & without meat, & even a cheese option without cheese (Oh! Happy cows!). Such indulgence would surely deserve five stars out of stars, but mark well these small details that may bear improvement (but be not discouraged, gourmet grilled cheese seeker. This restaurant is divine). Firstly, the price point runs a little high for an place of fast casualness. Secondly, the serving of tomato ketchup in packets, & water in plastic cups, feels cheap for a place of such relative expense. But still, we shall return, to explore further a menu of such divine and indulgent dairy provenance.

I get it. You want to come off as hipster because, ooh! You're located in Silver Lake and you're utilizing artisan ingredients. Heirloom tomatoes?! Say it ain't so! European imported cheeses?! Why wasn't I first in line after the ribbon cutting ceremony?! I mean ... come on yo. Let's be serious. It's. a. grilled. cheese. Everyone and their 5-year-old nephew knows that we can make these at our homes for $.35 each. Please get off your high horses, Heywood. Do us a favor and at least throw in some of those add-ons for free. I understand charging for bacon, which, by the way, was not crispy and thus a crime against humanity. But lighten up on the $14.50 meals here, will ya? $14? This sandwich better sing opera every time I take a bite. To top it off, they sell vintage bottles of soda that cost no less than $3, most likely (I passed washing my food down in order to afford the cost of living). So if you'd like to pay $20 for a small, pretentious grilled cheese and a double shot of Coke, by all means - come visit Heywood. HeyWOULDN'T! ...ever come back. Thanks for the bread and cheese.

  • Allen J.

Heywood was delicious! The staff was super friendly, and helpful, and the sandwhiches were spectacular. I had the Tres Truffle Shuffle. Really great combo of ingredients. The bleu cheese gave a great tang and creamy texture that mixed well with the buttery/salty flavor of the truffle salt and cheese. The bread was toasted for the perefect crunch. The sandwhiches here are served with tomato soup/dip and a spring mix salad. Just a little warning, if you're going there with an appetite, don't opt for the half sandwhich. Although it comes with the salad and soup, you're going to be hungry.

Between idiots scorning a place because it is too "hipster" (excuse me for reading as a child, developing some interestes and opinions on things, and having enough money to pay an adequate price for a sandwich without worrying about overdrawing my bank account) and girls who review things in a quirky way or mention the phrases "the boyfriend/the gentleman/etc.)/write haiku's/or address the restaurant like a person, yelp has become incredibly tedious- so here are some quick facts. Yes- you CAN make a grilled cheese at your house!! Yes- you can even make 15 grilled cheese sandwiches for under $10 at your house!!!! However, grilled cheese falls into that category with salads, it's usually better if someone else makes it. (maybe everything falls into that category). If you've eaten anywhere other than fast food lately, you'll see the prices aren't unreasonable. There are good options. The girls working have been friendly, helpful, and remember me- always a plus! The hours on the weekend are awesome, and the tomato soup is really good! My only wish is that Muenster was on the menu. Muenster with apple slices make a really great grilled cheese.

scratched the itch for a delicious grilled cheese, and the tomato soup is wonderful too. wish they served more of the soup actually. i had the heywood, which was delicious. i'm not a big fan of the amount of caramelized onions, so that took it down a tiny notch, but still, it was amazing. my date had the bon appetite, which was delicious and sweet. would be a great breakfast sandwich. the side of tomato soup didn't really make as much sense w/that one though. great for me though, bc i got to eat it!

Love this place! All kinds of Grilled Cheese and always comes with a side salad and tomato soup (delish). Decor is great and has a cafe feel. The staff is super friendly. Open late! I eat there or take it to go. Parking on Sunset or on the side street.

I'm probably not the first person to think "holy cheesus!" after taking a bite of their grilled cheese goodness. If you love cheese, you must come here. But that's not all. Even the chunky creamy tomato soup dipper is great. I will gladly risk GERD & lactose tolerance episodes to eat here again.

  • Kate N.

This place still rocks my world. I get the Caprese every time - it's relatively light and sooo good with the soup dipper and salad. I crave this sandwich! The new decor is super adorable and much more warm and welcoming than before. Heywood is my forever love.

Hipster-ish, but pretty good! I had the fig grilled cheese. It was very tasty, a bit too sweet. And I tried the spicier grilled cheese too, I highly recommend that! And the tomato soup is great too

Heywood makes a mean grill cheese! I had their Italian Blue Jeans sandwich and it was delicious! I love that they're open late (till 3am on Friday and Saturday) but am sad that they don't offer a restroom. If I'm gonna buy an $11 grilled cheese, let me go wash my hands first. You're not the Grilled Cheese Truck, Heywood!

  • Miki W.

I was VERY impressed with my "Bill Clinton's Epiphany"... it was perhaps the best vegan grilled cheese I have ever had. It had red peppers, avocado, and some ridiculously gooey and cheesy vegan cheese on it. That sandwich gets an A+++! Here is my one small objection, and reason for a 4 star review, instead of 5. Now, I really, truly appreciate that they have a vegan option at all! That is amazingly cool of them. All of the sandwiches come with a tiny bowl of tomato soup for dipping in. Which I was looking forward to. After I placed my order and sat down, an employee ran over and informed me that the tomato soup isn't vegan. And I was glad he warned me! But I wish it stated in print, somewhere, that the soup isn't vegan, because I don't believe that every employee will be with it enough to warn people they suspect of being vegan to skip the soup! And I'm not gonna lie, I was sad I couldn't have the soup. Why not just make a vegan soup, if you're gonna have a vegan sandwich? Vegan tomato soup isn't hard to do! :-) Still..... that really was a great sandwich! Maybe a little pricey at $12 (especially considering that I didn't get to have the soup with it!!!), but I know I'll go back for that sandwich again very soon! :-)

Dear Heywood, I am in fact a very, VERY loyal Grilled Cheese fan. Ever so much, that once I stepped into your fine location... I knew that you guys knew what you were doing. I came with 2 other patrons and we all had different sandwiches, and we were ALL blown away with our meals. The Heywood.. spectacular, the Clinton.. (with real cheddar.) astounding, and the Classic ..still just as good as the others. Staff was super nice & helpful, and the place was very clean upon entering. (always a plus) I would recommend this place to EVERYONE i know, and I seriously can't wait to come back. That might even be later today.

This cute little place is such a treat especially if you LOVE grilled cheese sandwiches, creamy tomato soup and variety of vintage sodas. Don't expect to walk in and be able to order other off grilled cheese entrees, it is a grilled cheese sandwich place :) with a twist. I always get "Not Quite a Classic"with tomatoes and my friend loves "Muy Caliente." Their S'mores dessert is incredible too. Nice people, great deal and in the heart of Silver Lake.

i was a little wary of a restaurant that only served grilled cheese but THEY KNOW WHASSUP. my grilled cheese was fantastic. i ordered the cotswold (creamy w/ onions & chives) on sourdough and added a little truffle salt. it was $10 + tip and came with a side salad and little cup of tomato soup. only downsides are the slowish service (we were the only patrons there and it took 15+ minutes to get our food) and awful lighting (perhaps just a nighttime problem as these daytime yelp pics look cute). i sat outside so i didn't feel like i was in a hospital cafeteria. also not sure if their lights are on a motion-sensor or if their employees were just itching to get off work - we came in just before 9pm on a weeknight and their lights were already dimmed as if they were closed. they continued to turn off the main lights several more times, confusing many people who were stopping by for dinner. bros, you close at 10pm. keep them ugly lights on.

  • Katy G.

Cant complain too much about the sandwich wasn't bad wasn't good. I think they need to focus on the service aspect of customer service. The length it took to make our sandwiches was extremely lengthy for how slow the place was. I think my co-workers and I were waiting for an upwards of 20-30 minutes for our lunch. Also my order was taken wrong, i was charged too much since my order was taken wrong, and they charge $2.00 for a diet coke....without refills. Wont say i will never return but its not at the top of my go-to list in the area.

Simple eating done right! When we entered no one was behind the counter, which was a bit odd, but we sorted things out! My grilled cheese was perfect and hit the spot! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who want a casual, laid back spot to eat a fabulous cheesy treat!

I'm not one to go gaga over glorified grilled cheese but some friends and I were nearby and decided to check out The Heywood. We arrived around noon time and the place was a ghost town. I looked over the decent sized menu overhead and noticed that you can create your own starting at $9;average price with soup dipper and salad is around $12. I like the fact that they specialize in one thing and they only do that one thing and they do it well. The guy up front wasn't very knowledgable when I asked him basic pricing questions and seemed kind of zoned out. I got the Caliente grilled cheese for $12+tax and it was prepared in a good amount of time and delivered to my table. I'm not going to lie, I did enjoy the sandwich, does superduper, and a salad.. But they only had soda and the one thing I can drink, iced tea they did not have. Also, $12 for a grilled cheese just doesn't feel right. I do like that they have a Yelp special which I forgot to use. If you're curious about this spot, try it but it's nothing special.

CLOSING IN 3 WEEKS SO GO WHILE YOU CAN! They have very good grilled cheeses- a bit pricey but worth splurging on every now and then. Every grilled cheese comes with a side salad and a little bowl of tomato soup. Great staff and service!

Oh man, Heywood closed! Matt B. and I came here a couple times when it was relatively new, and I kept putting off reviewing it because I figured I'd keep going. Then we got married and got a panini press as a wedding present, and that made us think hard about paying $10+ for grilled cheese. Did everyone else get panini presses too? I liked Heywood. It was cute and casual, a great spot for a weeknight dinner, with some sidewalk seating for us plus dog. Service was friendly and quick, and the food was good, even if it was marked up. It's true that I can make grilled cheese at home for very cheap, but Heywood used better cheeses than we'd buy on our own, with some interesting accompaniments and a very good, silky tomato soup for dipping. I got soup and sandwich combos both times I went, and this was the way to go, the nice toasted bread sopping up the soup. It came with a little salad, too, which I mostly ignored, and sometimes we'd get kettle chips on top. The sandwiches were great. I tried the Not Quite a "Classic" and The Heywood. The Not Quite a "Classic" was a pretty simple take on a grilled cheese, featuring Cotswald cheese grilled into sourdough. The Cotswald provided the twist--it was a creamy cheese infused with onions and chives, giving it an extra savory layer of flavor. The Heywood was delicious, made with two-year aged English cheddar and caramelized onion confit on whole grain bread. The main problem with Heywood was that dinner for two rang up at $30 or so, which, in the end, proved too dear for something we could approximate at home. Still, I have only fond feelings for this place. May it rest in cheesy peace.

Really good! They had gluten free bread and even vegan cheese! The place was a cool trendy place, the only huge flaw was that their seats were disgusting. Like...really old with a ton of holes in them. It was really weird because the rest of the place seemed nice? Will go back tho!

Closing in 2 weeks!? So sad I discovered this place too late....but at least I got to try it at least once. We ventured to this place because we were looking for a cafe-like/quiet place to sit, eat, and talk around 9 PM. My friends and I each ordered a different type of grilled cheese....the Heywood, The Caliente, and this other sweeter one (forgot the name). They were all delicious and unique. It may be a bit pricey for grilled cheese sandwiches, but it is definitely a very filling meal. It also comes with a delicious small bowl (dipper) of tomato bisque and a delicious salad on the side.

Hipster cheese bar. 1.Food: A) Vegan Cheese: It was okay. I can't comment on actual cheese sandwich since I went to go eat with a friend when I was on a detox that prevent any dairy products. I can tell it's made with great quality and it tasted great but it's nothing I can't make at home. B) Old fashioned: Boyfriend loved it, but like my comment below not worth it for the price. 2. Decor: Really nice, with wood tables. 3. Price: Expensive 4. Service: Friendly staff. Honestly if you're a snob with your cheese, come here and give it a try. But spending 10-15 $ on a cheese sandwich, you are outta your mind. It would be 2 stars for me but an extra star for the decor and the simplicity of the menu. Great concept but I just don't know about a cheese sandwich shop, I guess you have to be in a mood for it.

After spending the day at Dodger Stadium, my girlfriends and I hit up Heywood. What a great find. Yes, $12-14 is a bit pricey for a sandwich, but it was worth every penny! We had the Muy Caliente, the Caprese, and the Bill Clinton's Epiphany (vegan!!) They were all delicious. Next time, I'll order an entire bowl of the tomato soup because it was yummy and perfect for sandwich dipping. By the way, Heywood doesn't have its own restroom, so you have to go next door to Lark which has fabulous cupcakes and cookies. Save room for dessert!

I LOVE the fact that they stay open tip 3am! After a night of drinking & debauchery, it's a melty grilled cheese sandwich that I crave for, not a dirty hot dog or tacos. And it's an actual shop with chairs and tables, not a food truck!! The menu at Heywood is simple but delicious. There's the classic, Vintage, but seriously you can make that at home. So why not kick it up a notch with The Heywood with caramelized onion confit! OR...this is what I recommend: Order the bread from The Game Changer, with the insides from The Peking Pig, and add the onion confit from The Heywood!! It's sweet & savory!! Winner!!!! Each meal comes with a fistful of spring mix salad, and tomato soup perfect for dipping. The only one item that I wasn't a fan on was The Holy Grail. Pulled pork, yum! The kimchee, thumbs down. It wasn't the typical kimchee you're used to eating at Korean restaurants. This one is homemade and all it ends up being is a spicy cole slaw. It was missing Korean authenticity to be labeled kimchee. Overall, grilled cheese sandwiches are major comfort food and the ambience makes you feel that way when you step inside. Immediately you're wafted with the aromas of toast and butter. There's an entire wall decorated with old photos encased in vintage frames, chalk-written quotes, and other country home decor. The service is nice and they keep the space clean. But no public bathrooms though?!

We tried this place, and didn't think there was anything special about it. Food was ok, but WAY overpriced. Come on, it's just cheese and bread; how much could that possibly cost? I'm sure their rent is high, but still I don't think a simple grilled cheese should cost so much. The tomato soup they give you is canned, and the portion of a joke. It isn't something I'll be craving anytime soon. I can make better grilled cheese at home.

I've been here twice already- once after a night of drinking, and again because it's within walking distance to my new home. I had the muy caliente the first time and the holy grail on the second, more recent visit. Both sandwiches were good. I prefer the muy caliente over the holy grail due to the pepper jack cheese and the guacamole. It is nice that your order comes with the necessary tomato soup for dipping as well as some greens tossed in a light dressing. I'm knocking it down from what would have been 4 stars to 3 for one reason- price. I get that for good cheese you gotta pay good money, but I can't justify spending 12-14 dollars for a grilled cheese sandwich.

April is Grilled Cheese month! Yup Yup so you need to go get your grilled cheese on! Had this place bookmarked forever and was happy to finally be in the area to get some cheesy goodness! On the busy streets of Sunset there are metered parking but it can be tricky to get a spot and when you do they are timed for an hour. Just enough time to go in and get cheesy. Inside, the resto is small with about 5-6 tables. You go around to the bar area where you will see their menu on a big blackboard yelp.com/biz_photos/heyw… . The staff there is very friendly and helpful if you cant decide which one to order. I ordered the Tres Truffle Shuffle with bacon ~ yelp.com/biz_photos/heyw… This is a plate of cheesy goodness. Served with a side salad and very tasty homemade tomato soup. The smell alone of melty cheese and bacon was making my tummy impatient as I took multiple pictures for yelp LOL. Finally my first bite yelp.com/biz_photos/heyw… and the tummy finally settled down happy and satisfied. Nice crusty country white bread. The blend of the appenzeller swiss cheese and aged english chedder and pointe reyes blue was a perfect blend of flavor and ooey gooey goodness. A dash of truffle salt and adding some bacon to the mix and you got yourself a helluva sandwich. Eyes ~ A small little cafe! Nose ~ Smells like someone cut some cheese LOL! Ear ~ Very quiet during off peak hours. Mouth ~ Oh my word I couldn't get a bite fast enough! Tummy ~ So very flipping happy to get some of this yummy goodness!

I visited Heywood with a friend when I was visiting Los Angeles. We'd visited the comic book shop down the street and were searching for something to eat when we walked past this. First--the gentlemen who served us were extremely kind and friendly. Our sandwiches were excellent. Perfect texture, perfect amount of cheese and fillings. The food made you feel cozy without making you feel weighed down. The tomato soup was excellent and had wonderful flavor and texture. The salad was simple but had a house-made lemony vinegarette on top which was just divine. Thoroughly enjoyed Heywood. Will stop in again if I'm in Silverlake.

I wasted my time and gas coming here. I rely on Yelp to help me when it comes to finding places to eat and the times they close. You guys state that you are open until 10pm. I got to your shop around 8:50pm 3/10/2015 and you guys were closed. You are the only place I've been to because of Yelp who have put incorrect information.

Grilled cheese that thinks waaaay too highly of itself. My girlfriend and I came here for lunch. It was meh. Not outrageously amazing grilled cheese made to perfection the way it should be if you have a freaking storefront. I get it, your are in silver lake and need to up charge to make rent... but for a 13 or 14 dollar grilled cheese sandwich, the pope better make the sandwich, and bless it.

Great little restaurant if you're in the area. Next time I want to try the short rib grilled cheese. This time I had the Muy Caliente which had some great flavor to it, my only suggestion would be to ask for extra guacamole if you're an avocado fiend like myself. My partner got the caprese grilled cheese and I absolutely loved the pesto sauce in it. Everything tasted freshly made, you can tell they put a lot of love into their food.

We'd been eying Heywood for a year, but I'd always been hesitant to throw down $12 for a grilled cheese sandwich; when I saw you also get salad and a mini cup of tomato soup, I said I'd go. And if you already saw the stars, you've probably surmised I was glad I did so. Cute place with dark wood, cheese facts and random photos on the wall, and overall eclectic decor that fits in just fine in this neighborhood. The menu is up behind the counter (the counter is tall, making the menu a bit hard to see for me)(stop laughing), and there are about a dozen choices; you can also make up your own sandwich, although there's no separate list of breads/cheeses/toppings, so I guess you just pull ingredients from the sandwiches listed. Order at the register, grab some silverware and water from the stand behind you, and grab a seat. Bonus points for the extra-thick paper napkins 'cause grilled cheese is oily by nature. I had the Game Changer: sourdough with English double-gloucester cheese and a smear of raspberry jam. It came with a little spring mix salad with a light vinaigrette, and the tomato soup "dipper," a tiny cup of soup (you can also order a proper bowl of soup if you'd like). Everything was served on wooden plates (is that legal?) and came out as soon as it was made; the food's made up front, so we could see the guys putting our dinners in the sandwich presses and my friend was delighted at watching his piping-hot sandwich oozing brie as it was set in front of him (apparently the cheese I got doesn't ooze). A hush fell over our table as we started stuffing our faces and we didn't talk for so long I found it almost awkward. All three of us gave thumbs-up on our sandwiches, although I thought the texture of my cheese was odd (what do I know about cheese, though? Not much, that's what). "Oh," you might be saying, "but I'm vegan/gluten-intolerant/lactose-intolerant/am pretending I'm eating a neanderthal's diet (because mashed cauliflower is totally the same as potatoes) and thus I can't enjoy Heywood's sandwiches." Guess what? You can! There's vegan cheese and butter (the Bill Clinton's Epiphany is a vegan sandwich) and gluten-free bread! WE ALL WIN! WE ALL GET SANDWICHES! It looks like, per sandwiches noted in other Yelpers' reviews, that the menu changes, which is cool, and I'm looking forward to seeing what pops up in the future.

Heywood is a nice trandy/hipster spot. The shop is small and reminds me of a coffee shop of some sort. The woodsy interior and smell of artisinal cheeses was attractive. Their grilled cheeses were quite regular. Good enough for a snack, but thats about it. The original Heywood was a natural fit. I wanted something that accentuated the cheese. Made with aged cheddar, caramelized onions, confit spread on whole grain bread, the sandwich was cheesy as can be. The bread was a but blocky and brickish, but did a good job in holding everything together.

Very nice little grilled cheese shop in Silverlake! I really liked the menu here because it has a little bit of everything, vegan choices( Bill Clinton's Epiphany), regular grilled cheese( the Vintage), all the way to choices for meat lovers( The Peking Pig & The Holy Grail! I tried the Caprese and it was delicious! It came with this tasty tomato soup dipper for the sandwich! Nice touch! The pricing is a little on the high end side for a sandwich, only deterrent from coming in every day. But still worth trying! I recommend the Bruce Cost Ginger Ale bottled drinks they carry, went great with my meal!

The Muy Caliente- Fontina and spicy Jack cheeses, sliced jalapenos, cream cheese and crunchy tortilla strips on sourdough + added avocado with the side of tomato soup and fresh greens = FANTASTIC. Best grilled cheese I've ever had. Prices are a little high considering it's just grilled cheese but considering the area it's nothing outrageous. I'm quickly becoming a regular just because of this sandwich.

CHANGED THE "game changer"!!!!????? OMG - I have been going here for about 1.5 years (pretty much since they opened) and was HORRIFIED to hear they changed the jam in my favorite sandwich the game changer. I ordered my "usual" and it just didnt taste right. I asked the guy behind the counter what was up and they told me that they changed the habanero spread. I was aghast. Whats next the soup? Dear management: If it's not broke...DONT TRY TO FIX IT! Regulars: AVOID the "new" Game Changer...it has CHANGED and NOT for the better. (and let the management know they ruined a perfectly perfect sandwich.) Still 2 stars because I will just find another sandwich and complain till you bring back the raspberry habanero jam you had before (that they even used to sell by the bottle for us addicts - thats gone too). Your new filling is just plain gross. also PS: vegan made on the same grill as pork juice = not vegan

Finally a place to get my grilled cheese fix without the long line of "The Grilled Cheese Truck". I have tried a few grilled cheese eating establishments with mixed results, but Heywood is best in terms if quality of the food and atmosphere. The customer service is friendly and informative. The food is made to order, portions are adequate for the price, and the selections of sandwich. options are plentiful. The atmosphere of the restaurant is super casual, clean, and is great for loud people due to sound system. Street parking is plentiful bit metered.

Honestly I think its pretty damn hard to mess up a grilled cheese so I am not even going to comment on those (although I've only had the heywood and its great - prefer my american cheese though but I'm ghetto with my grilled cheeses) LETS TALK ABOUT THE STAR OF THE SHOW HERE. TOMATO SOUP!!! Oh man their tomato soup is "da bomb". Make sure to order a cup because they just give you a little side of it and YOU WILL BE SAD when your crack shot is gone. I can't say anything about there location since this has always been brought to me after a night of drinking.

You know, I thought about this allll day today. I really wish I was lying but I'm not. If I lived near here, I would come here everyday, but alas I live too far!!!! I came here and got the heywood, because hey, why not try the namesake grilled cheese. It was delicious! Good, buttery, soft bread, melty, gooey cheese, and the side salad and little tomato soup was delicious!!! The tomato soup and the grilled cheese were perfect together!!! So why the four stars?! It's too far (not Heywood's fault), the parking is hard (I can't parallel park T_T), and it's a bit pricey for grilled cheese, but that's my opinion. Plus, I definitely want to come back still!!! MAYBE THIS WEEK since I keep thinking about it! Although---since writing this review I tacked on another star for staying open so LATE 2AM, for a night owl fatty like me!

Heywood a Grilled Cheese Shoppe is located on Sunset Blvd. It's surrounded by many mom and pop restaurants, boutiques and hair stylists shops. I recently called in a to-go order. I absolutely love cheese and there's nothing more awesome than a cheese sandwich. Food: The Heywood: 2 year aged English cheddar with a caramelized onion confit spread on sourdough. The sandwich itself was pretty tasty, but for me personally, the caramelized onions made it a little bit too sweet. It was more of like a dessert sandwich since it was so sweet. Served alongside a salad which was refreshing and the tomato bisque was perfectly creamy and had awesome flavor. $11 The Heywood was slightly disappointing, but I will go back to try out the other sandwiches, since many of the reviews talk about the Bill Clinton's epiphany and muy caliente.

Had been wanting to try this place for quite some time and was utterly disappointed once having grilled cheese here. My boyfriend split the heywood and the one with the raspberry habenero jam and they both could have been so much better. The Heywood was basically burnt on the outside and they had overcooked it so badly that the cheese just spilt out. The habenero ham overpowered the other sandwich. Very greasy. The tomato soup was also spicy which was weird. Overall, for such a rich and calorie dense meal, I'd rather have something else and we probably won't be back to Heywood.

I love cheese and sandwiches! But what I love the most is cheese on my sandwiches and if this cheese is ooey gooey melted goodness on my sandwich I would love it even more! This small sandwich joint has some of the best grilled cheese sandwich creations you could ever imagine. From cheeses to breads, and add ons to sodas/drinks this place has freshest ingredients for their yummy grilled cheese sandwiches! The first time here I tried their caprese sandwich. Which was mozzarella cheese with basil, roma tomatoes with this delicious walnut pesto spread on sourdough bread. The sandwich also comes with Spring mix salad with balsamic vinegar dressing and a tiny cup of creamy tomato soup. That day I only ordered their half sandwich special at $6.50, and yeah their half sandwich special also comes with salad and tomato soup. Anyway I went again this past Sunday and I built my own grilled cheese sandwich creation with fontina cheese, pesto, roasted peppers, bacon on multi grain bread 'cause they didn't have oat wheat. I was full by the end of half the sandwich which I had to ask for a box to take the other half home. Sandwiches here tend to be expensive passing the $11 even $14 but they're the artisan-gourmet kind so you really get what you pay for. There's also vegan and gluten free options plus complimentary water pitcher in front of the cash register right with utensils and napkins. The only reason why I am giving this place a 4 stars review is because they don't have a restroom on site and when you ask they just tell you to go to Lark Cake (next door) to use their restroom. Also parking can be a little pain in the butt, but there are metered parking spots in front.

I really like this place- the sandwiches are served with a side of tomato soup for dipping and a salad made of delicious greens. We had the habanero avocado sandwich and brie with fig. I would have given this please five stars but the avocado was not ripe. It had the brown fibers in it the flesh. Other than that this place is delicious.

Reading some of the other reviews, perhaps I just came on a bad day. I had a Glouchster cheese sandwich with what I thought was a "bit of habanera jam. This must be the worst sandwich I have ever had. There must have been a least a half cup of jam on the sandwich. some of the jam dropped on my lap. It got on my glasses, this with even 3 napkins. I am a dainty eater. There was just so much jam! The sandwich was so cloying. The salad was drenched with dressing. A friend I came with had the brie with something sweet on it. She had the same experience. The concept of the shop is good. I don't know why they ruin it with so much sugar

Hands down best grilled cheese in LA. Their sandwiches are made to perfection, and their tomato soup for dipping is extremely flavorful. Game Changer" with habanero jam is killer! They have a great selection of pop and the interior is great. Good ambiance, a bit of a smaller space, but not uncomfortable by any means.

More than comfort food, it's a wonderfully casual and inexpensive place to grab a quick lunch when you're on the run without feeling disgusted with yourself afterwards. I recommend splitting the sandwich and salad. They're enormous!

Since grilled cheeses are supposedly one of the simplest things to cook at home, most folks wouldn't want to spend their hard earned money at a restaurant that only sells this iconic sandwich. I can honestly think of only a few reasons why anyone would want to dine at Heywood. 1. They're lazy and don't want to cook themselves 2. They're lousy cooks who can't even properly prepare toast 3. They're addicted to grilled cheese sandwiches 4. They're drunk 5. They're high as a kite 6. They're both 4 and 5 at the same time I fall into two of the categories above. Can you guess which two? My wife, cousin and I came here recently for dinner. This is all we ordered: Muy Caliente- Fontina & spicy Jack cheeses, sliced jalapenos, cream cheese & crunchy tortilla strips on sourdough Italian Bleu Jeans- Freshly sliced mozzarella, creamy blue cheese, fresh walnut pesto & sundried tomatoes on sourdough Game Changer- English double-gloucester cheese & organic homemade habanero jam on sourdough Bon Appetite Brie- Triple creme French brie & organic fig jam on cinnamon infused raisin bread topped w/ raspberry sugar crystals Out of the four grilled cheeses we split, my favorite was the Italian Bleu Jeans. In all honesty though every single sandwich was a home run. Each one was super cheesy and flavorful. Each sandwich also comes with a small salad and a shot of homemade tomato soup, which was great for dipping. The prices here a tad high. At $11 per grilled cheese I can see why some reviews on Yelp said this place was too pricey. Since I'm an awful cook who couldn't prepare a grilled cheese as tasty as the ones I had at Heywood I didn't mind the prices. Darn! I just gave away one of the categories I fall into. If you happen to be in the area I highly suggest you check out Heywood. I love the fact that they're open till 3am on the weekends. This is the perfect spot to pick up some late night drunk eats after clubbing or bar hopping in Hollywood. Oops! Did I just give away the other reason why I came here? Maybe. Maybe not. You'll never know.

I strolled into this place at 2:00 AM, and it was simply amazing. I got the Muy Caliente, and it may be the most amazing thing I've ever eaten, but that could be the booze telling me that. It's a bit pricey for just cheese and bread, but I don't mind. It was totally worth it. The guys working there were super friendly and patient even though we were all a bit loud and slightly inebriated. I will definitely be heading back there.

Cute little place. They take KCRW fringe benefits, so you'll save 15% as a member. I got a half sandwich which came with a small bowl of tomato soup for dipping, and a small side of greens. This was not too expensive and the right amount of food. The sandwich was delicious and not too greasy. If you want a huge, greasy grilled cheese, then stick to the Grilled Cheese Truck. These sandwiches are more elegant. There is no restroom, which I think is worth noting. Also, it is RIGHT next door to Lark, so after having a non-greasy grilled cheese, you can reward yourself with a delicious cupcake.

Hmmm. What to say. Well i love grilled cheese sandwiches (kind of hard not to) and don't me wrong - this place makes a pretty good grilled cheese sandwich. Now for the "howevers" The service sucks. We wiped down our own table and asked them three times to fill up the water pitcher by the cashier (the only water source) The associates are nice but just sort of "there" This place MIGHT have gotten four stars had they had the tomato soup dipper...instead they give you CHILI. The f*@ck is up with that ?!?!? Who WANTS CHILI with a GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH. Have it as an option? Fine. But don't tell me you don't have regular tomato soup... CHILI ?!?!?! You pretty much tackled and AL-QEADED my childhood memories. Seriously. POOF.

Overpriced. I had the gamechanger and a cup of tomato soup. The soup had a ton of different flavors- strongly tasted of basil and was a bit spicy. However, it did not taste like tomato soup...not "creamy tomato soup" as is advertised. I would never purchase a cup of this soup again. The sandwich was too greasy. Not to mention, soggy on the side where the habanero jam was spread. In addition, and through no fault of the folks who created it, I did not like the sweetness of the jam. It did not pair well with the extremely salty cheese. And it was not spicy at all. The only thing I did discover was that dipping the sandwich in the soup made it easier to eat....as the soup overpowered the jam. Sucks that the food wasn't more satisfying for the price paid. However, the flavors and textures just didn't work for me.

A little pricey but good and with big proportions. Open super late on the weekends can't really go wrong most of the menu is really good. Usually go with the Muy caliente grilled cheese my fav.

My kids gave it a 10! My mom and I really enjoyed our sandwiches. I got the Clinton and she got the spicy jack Caliente. The home aid tomato soup to die for.

Normally this is my favourite place! Today we ordered our usual sandwiches, the game changer and the muy caliente, and they were a little disappointing. The muy caliente didn't seem to have any jalapeños in it, so it wasn't that caliente. Also the tomato soup wasn't the same creamy delicious one that we're used to! Hoping that this is temporary, because usually I have a top class experience!!

This grilled cheese sandwich was amazing! I have had some really good ones but this 1 was outstanding. I can't wait to try others. Short 1 star because the tomato soup was made w/red pepper puree & was full of veggies (carrot & celery). I wasn't a fan of it and for $11 I'd much rather pay $8 and you can keep the soup & lettuce Maybe one day soon.

Who knew that one of the most basic American comfort foods could turn into something so cool? Heywood is a cute, small, trendy boutique off Sunset that serves the classic to grilled cheeses beyond your wildest imaginations! Hits: * About a dozen gourmet grilled cheeses -- some with straightforward names... others that are more playful * Reasonably priced for a sizeable cheese sammich, garden salad, and a tomato soup dipper ($7 classic grilled cheese, $11 for the sammiches with fancier cheeses) * If none of the designer grilled cheeses tickle your fancy, you can create your own! * Tomato soup is sooo creamy, rich and freshly brewed -- dipper cup was the right size for dipping generously with a few sips leftover, but it was so good I'm ordering a full bowl of the tomato soup ($3.50) the next time * Surprisingly preferred the Classic Grilled Cheese ($7) that oozed melted sharp cheddar out of the perfectly toasted white bread to my Tres Truffle Shuffle ($11), which had too many flavors in the sammich, plus the bleu cheese crumbles greeted me at the end when my sammich had gone cold... and that was not very appetizing :/ * Great service!! -- the cashier (and potentially part owner?) was so personable and quick for someone who had to man the cash station and be the runner * Half sammich combo ($6.50) offered for those with a smaller appetite or less time to scarf down food... Any of the sammiches on the menu is up for grabs! * Basil lemon water to drink in compostable plastic cups :) Lessons Learned: * This place is vegetarian! Only form of protein here is cheese... which probably isn't even a protein... * The place is tiny with 10 tables at most, so bring to-go if you can't spot an open table * Check into Yelp BEFORE you order to redeem 10% off discount How can I not return when there's a sammich called Clinton's Epiphany that is calling me to try since I missed it this time around?!

Bottom line at the top: yummy nummy! A hearty grilled cheese salad with a yummy dipper and side salad! I found the dressing to be very soy sauce-ey though, other than that I love this place. -- Open super late, fabulous employees, and a cheeky menu? I love all three! When I was here I had the special sandwich by Joy the Baker (bread and butter pickles) and another new sandwich. Both were yummylicious and this is coming from someone who HATES pickles. Give it a shot! Easy street parking and plenty of seating inside.

I love grilled cheeses! the only grilled cheese sandwiches I've had are made at home, so this was a nice change. Heywood is a good place to satisfy your craving for a hearty, warm and melty grilled cheese sandwich. It comes with a salad and a delicious tomato dipping sauce that I think is more of a soup. It was so smooth and light, it'd be nice if they gave it in a large bowl :D I had the classic Heywood with 2 year aged Cheddar, and caramelized onions on sourdough. I could really taste the cheese, it was so delicious. The sandwich isn't too big but it is very filling. A very satisfying meal!

I've been looking for a good spot to replace my favorite Chicago grilled cheese joint ever since I moved back to LA, and this is it. There's a wide variety of grilled cheese styles that you can get here. All of them are going to be on the heavy side, but you don't order a grilled cheese in the first place unless you're planning to indulge. They may all be heavy, but there is still a range - from the decadent, oozy truffle shuffle, to the relatively restrained "Heywood." This latter selection is their eponymous dish, with sweet caramelized onions, yummy! I liked their muy caliente as well, a fun variation that incorporates jalapenos and tortilla chips. And yes, the grilled cheese are well grilled. No half-melted mess will disturb your sense here. And they accomplish the feat of turning the parts that spill over into crusty, buttery, gloriousness - it's amazingly difficult to find another place in LA that can do this. What more can you ask of a grilled cheese? And it's open til 3 am on weekends. It's the best option to be found in town at that hour. My only complaint is the sides that they serve with their sandwiches. Tomato soup, when accompanying a grilled cheese, should be a nicely acidic counterpoint to the greasy cheesiness. At Heywood, the tomato soup is just too heavy, creamy and sweet to serve that function. The salad dressing is overly oily as well. But the grilled cheese itself is still the best that I've had in LA yet!

I enjoyed my sandwich and soup, but everything is SO overpriced. And the drinks aren't refillable. Bummer. The side salad was REALLY GROSS to me too. I guess this place is supposed to be a gourmet grilled cheese place but it's more of a hipster joint with not much customer service.

Good cheese. Rude staff. (Neutral side note: no bathroom) What I ordered was tasty. But when I asked the staff for info about their cheeses/menu and they gave me short answers. You'd think if I was asking multiple questions about the product/business I must've been genuinely interested and wanted more than a 5 word response.

BOMB GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES! Came here around 2am for some post clubbing munchies. It's awesome how they're open late. Split a heywood with a friend. It's comprised of toasted sourdough with caramelized onion confit spread filled with cheddary goodness. Dip all that into their delicious house-made tomato soup and you got the perfect late night drunchies food. It comes served with a side salad as well which was ehh, pretty forgettable compared to everything else on the plate. $11 is leaning towards the pricey side but the quality of their food more than makes up for it.

These people are food ARTISTS. The combinations of flavor in every single sandwich are EXQUISITE. And the dipping sauce/soup is one of the best I've had. I even love the simple salad that comes with it. I cannot recommend this place enough! I have tried every sandwich on the menu except the one with the onions and the simple grilled cheese. ALL GOOD. The Muy Caliente and the Tres Truffle Shuffle are probably my favorite. ALSO: They have a Vegan sandwich that is great! FTW

My Caprese grilled cheese was delicious but I don't know if I could justify spending $12 for a sandwich again. Overall, a good meal that's really overpriced!

Went here really late. One guy cooking the grilled cheese it took over 25 minutes to get our orders together. Once we got the food it was pretty good, but for late night I could think of so many tastier (and cheaper) spots. They also forgot to pack salads when we got it to go. And at the end of the day, com'on, 12 dollars for a grilled cheese sandwich? Get real.

Cheeeeseeeee Heaveeenn! And open till' 3am?! Talk about Drunk Munchies. Fat attack, heart attack..deadly. My boyfriend had this place bookmarked for me knowing how much I love cheese and we finally got to try it! Everything is cheeeeeeezy good :D Of course he got the Muy Caliente ($10) cuz he loves his Spicy Jalapenos. It comes with two different kinds of cheese, Fontina and Spicy Jack, melted on top of sliced jalapenos, with cream cheese on sourdough bread. This is delicious but what I ordered was even better! I got the Caprese ($11) which comes with mozzarella cheese melted into sourdough bread with fresh basil, roma tomatoes and PESTO SAUCE! Pesto Saucee anything will satisfy me but the grilled cheeses with Pesto Sauce and their tomato soup..perfection. Every order comes with tomato soup & salad with balsamic dressing. All portions are realllly heavy and filling but they offer half sizes! Normally I'd order the full size and take the other half to-go to eat later but it's not as good the next day. Quick & Easy!

I ordered to go on Tuesday. It was my first time there. I had ordered the Heywood & tres truffle shuffle. Best grilled cheese I've ever had. The Filipino guy that took my order was very nice. The only thing I didn't really like was the pricing. 11 dollars is alot for a sandwich that's cut in two that comes with a small salad & tiny tomato soup. Maybe if it came with another sandwich cut in two, cool. But for me not my everyday go to kind of place. But I would totally come back once in awhile for grilled cheese..

Just went here tonight with the boyfriend for a post-run meal. I'm always a fan of anything involving cheese (especially grilled cheese sandwiches) but always a little weary when I'm around my bf. He's more of a carnivore and is never seen spending $$$ on food that has no meat in it. So after two tries, he finally said yes to coming to this place! SCORE! I have won ze battle. Right when we get inside though, he found out that the only meat option they had at the moment was bacon. "You can add bacon on any of the sandwiches," said the employee so that he did. I had The Heywood and he opted for Muy Caliente. If only I knew that checking in gets you a 10% off your first order offer, I wouldve done it before he had paid already. Ahh, next time! If you order one of their special sandwiches, it comes with a side salad and tomato soup, great for dipping. They have self-serve water and about 6 tables inside and 1 table outside for your dining pleasure. They have no bathrooms available though. Street parking is fairly easy to find since it's right off Sunset and there's also neighborhood parking around the corner. They're open late which is a plus since I usually eat dinner after 9pm. Also, since they're still fairly new, the employee told us that they'll be adding more meat options soon like chicken, etc. After our meal, my bf actually said it was good. He actually said his meal tasted good when it had no meat in it besides bacon. Heywood, you done good. We will be back. Be advised, they play country music, hence the whole theme of the restaurant. Which is quite a breath of fresh air from the rest of the restaurants on the block.

All I can say is YUM! This is by far, the ultimate grilled cheese shop I've been to. In the heart of Silver Lake, it's a tad small inside but worth the time/effort to get one of these delicious treats! So I tried the Tres Truffle Shuffle and a bite off of the Bon Appetite Brie. SO GOOD! The one I got had blue cheese, and I was instantly hooked. I love the tomato soup dipper it comes with---perfectly complimented my Shuffle. Plus the salad---a perfect balance amongst all 3. My friend's Brie was on the sweeter side because of the cinnamon & raisin bread and the jam. But it worked so well, that I will definitely get that the next time I come back! They also have water infused with lemon and maybe cucumber (unlimited and free of course). I forgot what exactly was in it, but it was really refreshing. I LOVE cheese & this charming eatery! Just posted pictures of my food here!

I'm giving Heywood the benefit of the doubt on this busy Sunday night. It being my first time here, I was told by the friendly cashier that it was especially busy, thus the reason for the slightly smokey haze inside. I must say, I was turned off when I heard about $11 grilled cheese sandwiches, but when I learned that *every* sandwich is served with tomato soup and a spring mix salad, my hesitancy was put to rest. At the cashier's suggestion, I ordered the Gamechanger. THREE BIG THINGS that the folks in charge should know about: 1) I had to wait about 20-25 minutes for my sandwich, which I'll let fly because it was pretty busy. 2) The spring salad was WAY overdressed. The puddles of balsamic in each bite were tingling the back of my throat before the leaves even left the fork. 3) And here's the biggest one... So the nice fellow brings out my sandwich, walking past the station where they keep silverware and napkins, drops off my delicious looking feast, and tells me that the tools I need, which he just passed (with a free hand no less), are all of the way across the room. Just when I think I get to satiate my extreme starvation, EYE have to GET UP and walk ALL OF THE WAY across the room. "Napkins and utensils are over by the water if you want them," he said. If I WANT them? No, it's fine, I'll just use my fingers to scoop the soup and phone to shovel the salad into my pie hole. Ok. I'm being (extremely) dramatic, but really. It's quite ridiculous that it isn't protocol to bring at least A napkin and silverware for a meal that so obviously needs said tools. All in all, Heywood was a good experience. The food was DELICIOUS. Go here. Especially since they offer an original sandwich that costs just $7 (with soup and salad included). Don't let my Seinfeldness deter you. I'll be back!

When my friend told me he was going to take me to a grilled cheese place, I thought to myself "Uhm, I can do that at home". BUT, I ordered the Truffled Grilled Cheese, I was blown away. I ordered it half that cam with a drink and their tomato bisque dip, perfection! I would definitely come back to try others!

There is something just so ridiculously comforting about grilled cheese. At 12am after a good few hours out on the town with friends, it's also probably the last thing you should be putting into your system with all that butter and cheese. But that's exactly what makes it so much better. I like simple when it comes to classic comfort food, so I just went with the classic. I thought for 7 bucks it was a great portion, especially including the soup and salad. All of it tasted amazing. AMAZING. I can't wait to go back and maybe try the heywood sandwich next time.

Cute little shop in Echo Park that serves up fantastic grilled cheese - sandwiches are served with tons of cheese oozing out, with a little "tomato dipper" and some mixed greens. Friend and I had the truffle shuffle and the bon appetit brie. Both were just dripping with cheese, which is awesome since one of my big pet peeves is when grilled cheeses skimp on the cheese. Service was friendly and sweet. I'll definitely be returning here to try some more sandwiches.

On one of the chillier, drizzly days we had a couple weeks ago, I came in with a friend and had half a caprese, bowl of tomato soup, and salad. The bread was perfectly buttery and toasted, lots of yummy, melty mozzarella cheese and overall great flavor with the pesto. I also liked the soup, little chunks of tomato and maybe carrot--be warned if you wanted a smooth tomato soup. The salad was the regular mixed greens, but they served it with a ginger tasting dressing. It didn't really match the flavor profile to me, I'd rather have balsamic or something--but it's not a dealbreaker. I thought everything was tasty and I enjoyed it. The atmosphere is kind of cold though, but it's a food you want to eat fresh, so I can't imagine I'd take it home. Oh well. I'm not opposed to going again if someone wants to, I probably won't be the suggester though

Let's just start off by letting me announce that I LOOOVE grilled cheese. We saw this shoppe on the way to watch the Dodgers play the Giants (GO GIANTS!) (please dont hurt me). At that moment, I knew this place was a MUST TRY, and it really is. I got a caprese HALF sandwich and that was filling enough. It came with a tomato soup dipper which I didnt really particularly like. I like having smooth tomato soup with my grilled cheese and the dipper had a lot going on. The service was great and very friendly. Definitely coming back and trying the truffle next time. Parking is a b*

When I first walked by this place, I recall thinking, "Oh great, another over priced grilled cheese shop", but I eventually have in and tried it out. Turns out, their ~$11 meals are a great deal. They come with salad, tomato soup and a oversized grilled cheese sandwich. I personally like the Italian Bleu Jeans, which has mozzarella, bleu cheese, walnut pesto and sun dried tomatoes. Another plus is it seems to by byob. I saw some people pop open a bottle of wine they brought in. Might be a good dinner/pre-game location! Enjoy :)

I'm a regular at Stark waxing studio so I always pass Heywood and was super curious because who doesn't love grilled cheese? I came to Silverlake early for my appointment at Stark just so I could have lunch at Heywood. I ordered the half order of the Tres Truffle Shuffle which came with a nicely dressed salad and a cup of tomato soup all for around $7!!! It was SO delicious and filling! Every time I come to Stark, I'm coming for lunch here first!!!

The food is melt in your mouth, close your eyes and savor, delicious. I absolutely love the tomato dip/soup and I've never really liked tomato soup so that's saying something. The manager/owner was really nice. The day we went, their credit card reader wasn't working and was very apologetic. He gave my boyfriend and I dessert on the house for the inconvenience. Notes: - Their sandwiches are pretty big but they have a half-sandwich option. - Its on Sunset and its a cute little hipster joint. With that being said: Its popular and its only street parking available. - Yes, the price is a little high, but I think its worth it. I will be coming back again (and again).

Been wanting to check out Heywood forever and finally got the chance one rainy Sunday afternoon. I ordered 2 half sandwiches so I could try more than one of their creations. I got the brie and the truffle one. Brie was okay.. maybe a tad too sweet with the jam but overall had a good flavor. I'd almost consider it more of a dessert though. The truflle sammie was delish but admittedly not a huge amount of truffle flavor. Evenso, the combination of flavors was very good.. beware though that the cheese they use in this one is a bit greasy so beware of grease drippings. My friend ordered the Italian and I think it was the best one -- great flavor profile! Overall, the service was friendly and they were very accomodating to requests. We also got 10% off w yelp check in which was a nice added bonus. Looking forward to going back to try more of their creations!

Feel good food! This place was recommended by another foodie and I can see why. I sampled 4 different things from the menu and all are good but the best out of them all was "The Gamechanger." The place is open super late which is perfect for your late night cravings.

Went to get a cake at Lark's and my wife & I decided to have lunch at Heywood's. OMG !! What a great find ! Staff was fantastic - place was very clean - But best of all --- the FOOD ! Great grilled cheese sandwiches on the menu but being the picky guy that I am - I decided to "build my own" so I ordered a Swiss/Mozzarella on sourdough with bacon --- YUM !!! Since my wife & I were splitting it ,they put it on separate plates with a great tomato bisque for dipping and a great salad. I SO recommend this place !

4 stars because of the price. Everything about this place, including the fact that I can see it from my balcony.... is great. I'd give them 5 stars if they charged me less than $10 with a $30 minimum to deliver it across the street. I KNOW it sounds crazy that I'd ever get it ~delivered~ such a short distance, BUT I like to order this when I'm sick or extremely hungover. And I pay it. Because I'm bad with money. But I pay it because it is delicious, and worth it. I get "The Game Changer" ***add bacon (obvi) It's delish and comes with a tomato soup that I more use for dipping or just feeling wholesome knowing that I have the option of eating it, because it has always tasted a little funky to me. It also comes with a perfect sized side salad composed of REAL greens and a really good dressing. I also get a Mexican Coke because THEY HAVE MEXICAN COKE AND ALTHOUGH I DON'T DRINK SODA I HAVE TO GET IT BECAUSE MEXICAN COKE IS EFFING AMAZING. Sometimes.... actually usually when I'm hungover, not sick... I get the S'more for dessert. It's not too big, and so so good.

If you're a grilled cheese fan then this is your mecca. This place only serves grilled cheese sandwiches and they are ridiculously good. You leave wanting to have 2 or 3 because they are so delicious. Each sandwich is served with a small cup of tomato soup and a side salad. A great meal and the variety of cheeses are incredible. Love this place!

Grilled cheeses are good to begin with. This place does them great. At Heywood, the sandwiches are grood. Their soup is the best. Order extra soup. Order a lot of extra soup. The soup is to die for. See if they'll fill a keg with soup and send you home with it. Soup kegs! A girl can dream. My absolute favorite sandwich here is the Bon Appetite Brie. The menu says it's great for sharing, which is bogus, because who the heck shares a grilled cheese sandwich that is this delicious? Psychopaths and kitten murderers, that's who.

I went at 9pm on a Saturday night. It was empty and we found a parking spot right away up the street. The grilled cheese was delicious!!! I can't wait to eat my way through the menu. And I love the salad they give you on the side! Also, I got the "tomato soup". Now, I HATE tomato soup! But this wasn't so much a soup and it was a tomato sauce. It was amazing. It did feel like it took a while to get our food, but it could have been because I was hungry and the smell was unbelievably tantalizing! However, I would pass on the lemon bars. They stuck to the paper and were really hard to eat.

This place was awesome. I have avoided grilled cheese places after going to the Melt because that was a complete ripoff and turned me off to these establishments for a few months. Heywood is nothing like The Melt. Whereas The Melt gives you a wonderbread sized dropping of food, Heywood serves on some artisan breads. The Melt might pass off american cheese slices as gourmet but The Heywood actually has excellent cheeses. Their signature aged cheese in the Heywood was flavorful, rich and very filling, and the jalapeno spiced sandwich was equally as good with real jalapeño and i think olive slices throw in for good measure. The tomato soup is rich, filled with vegetable slices and garlic that has been slow cooked and done right. I only got the side that came with my order but next time I will be going for the bowl. It was my first experience and I am definitely coming back. The GF got the half sandwich for 6 dollars, I got the Jalapeno for 11 and after tax our meal was 19 dollars and change. Honestly its hard to beat that for dinner and I was actually full; this is considering I normally will wolf down a Dinos Chicken plate. I am one of those need to eat meat people and was a little worried that a dinner without it would not be filling but I was pleasantly surprised that I was content. Others might say the Grilled Cheese truck is to die for and you should go there but honestly, who wants to wait for more than an hour to get...grilled cheese? Not worth it even if it were steak. This place is classy and calm. They are a relatively new business and have been open for a year and a half and I hope it sticks around. The guy serving that day was nice enough to run outside and give me my glasses which I had left at the table. Cheers, -Phil

(Dined 11/30/12 F @ 9pm): Hey, would you mind creating a sandwich with my name in it!? After a non-filling dining experience at a nearby restaurant, my friend and I decided to walk the boulevard in search of something more to chomp on, and then we came upon Heywood A Grilled Cheese Shoppe, a place we've wanted to try since we've moved into the neighborhood months ago. I mean come on, who doesn't like grilled cheeses!? We cautiously entered and asked if they were still opened in which they said "...until 3am...!" Amazed by that response, we happily walked in, cased the joint since this was our first time and looked at the two chalkboard menus - one with the gourmet specials and one if you decided to make your own! The young man at the register gave us the lowdown about the place and explained what each special came with. After we digested it all, we were ready to order: the Heywood for me - made with two-year aged English cheddar, caramelized onion squeezed between two fat rectangular slices of sourdough and came with a small creamy tomato bisque-like dipper and a refreshing side salad with a light Italian dressing ($11.00) and a bottle of "vintage" American Root Beer ($2.75); the Bon Appetite Brie for my friend - made with triple crème French brie and a sweet fig jam stuffed between two small perfectly square slices of raisin bread with the same additions ($11.00) and a canned Diet Coke ($1.75). With drinks in hand, we found a small table along the wall underneath a wall display that reminded me of a 60's or 70's clock (sans the clock portion) my grandmother used to have. We also grabbed some complimentary lemon water put out on a separate table. The root beer was ever so bubbly, tasty, and was made with real cane sugar; I say keep it real! A young female eventually brought us our sandwich meals, and right off the bat, they smelled AMAZING! Plus, they looked like bento boxes. Neither of us could wait so we each picked up a half of our respective grilled cheese, "saluded" them and anxiously took a bite. DAMN, was our first thought! Mine was humongous and oozed with cheesy goodness from all sides. The bread was toasted to buttery crunchy perfection and the onion did some magic on the cheese. The tomato soup was exquisite and paired nicely with the cheeser as a dipper, but so much better eaten separate from each other. The salad was the cleansing agent between these one-two punch. As for the Brie cheeser, the cheese equally flowed out all sides and the sweetness would've satisfied any sweet-tooth. Great sandwiches both! We saved half of each for the next day since we give get our fill here (FYI...they still tasted very good the next day slightly nuked for 15 seconds). The service was very good from the young male who greeted us to another young male who took our order and gave us the lowdown since we were first-timers to the young female who brought our meal to us at the table. Great job, folks! Parking was limited to the metered street (until 8pm, I think) along Sunset Blvd. or any of the nearby side streets. I took a brisk walk from another restaurant nearby my crib, so no issues for me. Overall, Heywood A Grilled Cheese Shoppe wasn't making the same grilled cheeses we had as children made with plastic processed cheese slices on white Wonder Bread. To this day, I still loved grilled cheesers and enjoyed making them at home with all sorts of crazy combinations, but I'll splurge a bit to have someone else prepare one for me. I found good value based on the prices and service noted above (total bill was around $29.00 before tip), but as I've personally experienced when I got into my grilled cheese cooking habit, all of the ingredients (e.g. artisan bread, gourmet cheese, vegetable, meat) add up to as much if not more (and then you have a bunch of these items in your kitchen). The atmosphere reminded me of a soup kitchen, sterile, brick walls, high ceiling, tables along one wall and a couple in the front window, no TVs, and a couple of those aforementioned wall displays. The attire was totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops (wee bit cold this evening). And they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX!

My mother loves grilled cheese. I'm a sucker for spending lots on something I could make at home. It was meant to be that I'd end up at Heywood. But all kidding aside, this newish Silver Lake joint brings the fancy to a simple diner staple food. They've got a board full of cheeses to choose from with all sorts of other options to add and customize your dream cheese 'wich. The price isn't an arm and a leg - just one or the other. But the service and the actual quality of ingredients justifies at least one trip to try and see where your mileage is. Also, their tomato soup/'wich dip is amazeballs.

Finding the perfect grilled cheese is my Holy Grail. I've had both amaaazing grilled cheese sandwiches as well as ones so underwhelming that I was left with a profound sense of disappointment. My grilled cheese at Heywood (the Tre Truffle Shuffle) was DELISH. Definitely in the amaaazing category :) Service was quick, no nonsense. The tomato soup dipper was a great accompaniment, but wow. That cheese. Totally hit the spot. And I loved my Lemmy :) Thanks guys!

Heywood looks like a Quiznos but with funny mirrors and serious grilled cheese. I was eating my grilled cheese at 1 p.m. with a bunch of other men sitting at tables by themselves too and sort of felt self-conscious, and then lonely. One guy had his guitar with him on the other seat. Another other guy had his necktie thrown over his shoulder to avoid it being dipped in the cheese. Everyone was quiet except for the pop music in the background and the workers saying something to each other in Spanish. I felt slightly worse realizing I had enough time to pick up on all these details while I sat by myself waiting to eat a toasted grilled cheese. I haven't had a grilled cheese in years and don't believe I have ever ordered a grilled cheese before. It was certainly the most expensive grilled cheese I have ever had. I mean, even with the 10% off for first-time customers Yelp deal, a $13.05 grilled cheese was $11.75 including tax. When the grilled cheese came, it was ... a grilled cheese. My Bill Clinton's Epiphany vegan grilled cheese was seriously almost an inch thick with warm fake gooey cheese. They gave me more salad with Italian dressing since they told me the soup wasn't vegan. There was a lot of leafy greens. Inside the dark toasted bread of the grilled cheese were delicious warm peppers and fresh avocados. Specialty grilled cheese or not, I appreciate the strange experience of going to a grilled cheese shoppe more than eating the grilled cheese itself, which was good. I probably won't be coming back to this place unless I am with someone else and we're both in a giggly mood. If you're single and looking, there are a lot of guys from every demographic eating grilled cheeses by themselves here for lunch! TO THE OWNERS: Consider offering half-grilled cheese options for $5-$6 to get more people in the door!

SOOOOO GOOD! I always get the triple creme brie with fig and the small tomato soup. With a Mexican Coke, it's like the perfect meal to curl up with. The neighborhood needed more lunch spots, and Heywood fills the void.

I guarantee you will never look at grilled cheese the same way again! For those of you who say, "I would never spend $11 on some bread and cheese"-- take a risk on Heywood. Parking wasn't too bad; you will have to go down Micheltorrena and find some parking along that street. The decor of the restaurant was absolutely charming! From the black and white polaroids to some cheese-y quotes, the intimate little space felt so cozy and "home-grown". I got the Italian Bleu Jeans and it was worth every penny and then some! The healthy dose of cheese, along with the generous portion and the delicious tomato soup came served on a cute plate with a side salad. The only issue I have was that the salad was not easy to pick up with the blunt forks they have, but no big. If you're ever in the area-- you HAVE to check this place out.

***All sandwiches can be made gluten-free and/or vegan.*** If you're considering coming to Heywood, you really have a simple choice in front of you: eat awesome, freshly and masterfully prepared grilled cheese; or eat something else. Hopefully this review will assist you in that decision-making.

Due to the rainy weather, having gourmet grilled cheese with tomato soup sounded like a splendid idea. Drove by this grill cheese shoppe for quite sometime now and wanted to take my sister here who loves grill cheese sammies. To beat the rush, I decided to order through yelp Eat24 online service. It was the first time I've tried Eat24. When we got there they had just gotten our order from Eat 24. So we had to wait about 15 minutes for our order. They apologized for the delay and Michael whom I believe is a manager gave us a free sandwich coupon for the wait. Now that's good customer service folks!! What we tried: Bill Clinton with gluten free bread Muy Caliente on sourdough It was really tasty. The tomato soup was scrumptious. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of tomato soup but they changed my mind. No wonder people were ordering huge cups of soups with their sandwiches. Side note: The girl that works there is really sweet as well. Her penmanship is excellent. I wish I had that nice of a handwriting. ;P Thank you Heywood for making us such a delicious lunch. See you soon.

Was it good? Yes. Was it great? Not really. Was it worth the $9? A resounding no. Grilled cheese is something you pretty much can't F up. If so, heaven help you. I had the truffle sandwich, tomato soup and spring salad. Here's the run down. I really appreciate the half sandwich option. Perfect for grazers such as myself. The fact of the matter is, the blue cheese didn't translate well when sandwiched betwixt sourdough bread. There was a pool of oil oozing onto the plate. I'm by no means healthy but it was a bit much, even for me. The salad was your average ensemble of yard clippings with some dressing. The tomato soup, however, was yum. This is the kind of soup authors write novels about. It really had a fresh kick to it. I love adorable places like this, they make me wish I still lived in the area. Ill be making my own grilled cheeses until I can afford to live on that side of town.

This place is bomb dot com but two sandwiches and a drink 30 bucks? Wtf. I can make like 10 of these at home and drink a 6 pack of beer for that price. Prob Get super fat tho. Occasional spot.

Great gourmet take on the grilled cheese. A little pricey which would keep me away more than I would like, but every now and then this is a nice treat. The combinations on cheeses makes a dairy guy like me moan!

Grilled cheese from Haywood blow anything from the Grilled Cheese Truck out of the park. The quality and creativity of the sandwiches from Haywood is amazing. Tomato soup/dip thing is good. Love the fact that it's open late.

H-- ey! Why haven't you been here yet? You got an issue with cheese? E-- h, screw you then. This place rocks. It's my favorite food. Y-- ou can order from an array of different sandwiches each comes W-- ith a "tomato dipper" of bisque soup. That soup still has me drooling. O-- h actually, the cute male worker with curls had me drooling as well. O-- ften you don't get cute guys AND grilled cheese all in one spot. D-- efinitely try the Bon Appetite Brie. It was sweet and scrumptious.

One word to describe this place, disappointing. I was really skeptical about trying this place because it's pretty pricey at $10+ for a grilled cheese sandwich. I should've listened to my gut and not have come here. My friend and I got the Muy Caliente and The Heywood. Both were delicious to a certain degree but they were both too cold. Cold cheese means that it's solidified and not appetizing. The tortilla chips in the Muy Caliente were soggy by the time I bit into my grilled cheese and I didn't like the cream cheese in my sandwich. It also wasn't "caliente" enough. I enjoyed the Heywood but again, it was cold and the thick cheese was hard to chew and enjoy. I really liked the bread they used for the grilled cheese sandwiches though. The house spiced tomato soup dipper was good and I loved the chunks of the tomato in the soup. But again, too cold and I dislike cold soup. Service, however, was great. The guys were polite and attentive. Street parking around here is very tricky.

It was my first time here and I asked what was popular. The guy recommended couple of items but informed me they ran out of cheese. Hmmm. Needless to say, I wasnt a fan of the alternative choice.

Oh my god. I have the unlucky pleasure of working a few doors down from Heywood. I say unlucky because it makes me jealous when I see people walking by with their grilled cheese sandwiches and I can't eat them all. I've had several of Haywood's sammies and they have all been decadent and delicious. I remember the first time I ordered one to go, opened the box and found a salad inside. I thought it was so clever that they made a salad dressing on the side that tasted like tomato soup... then realized it really was tomato soup. Works as a nice warm dressing too..... Anyway, my love for Haywood A Grilled Cheese Shoppe continues to grow with each sandwich I eat. Their namesake grilled cheese is a must have.

Some of my co-workers recommended Heywood, so two of us went for lunch today. I ordered English Cheddar on Cinnamon Raisin bread... and it was so delicious. The cheese was easily the best part of the experience. I enjoyed dipping my sandwich in the Tomato soup, or just eating it in big gulps. I pretty much inhaled my meal. I'm definitely going to return so I can try other cheese configurations.

Wow. Absolutely speechless. This was the BEST grilled cheese I've had by far. I tried the Heywood, and am looking forward to coming back to try more. Comes with salad and a cup of soup, can't go wrong! Don't be a dingus. CHECK IT OUT!

I really want to like this place more. The bread they use is thick delectable slices. The ingredients for their unique grilled cheese combinations are delicious. My big issue, and I do realize it's gluttonous, but I wanted more "goodieness" packed in their sandwiches. I ordered the "Muy Caliente," and it was muy good. The problem was more bread than cheesey indulgence...I wanted more cheesy yummyiness in my mouth! I'm guesstimating that there was probably one to two slices of cheese with a dolup of cream cheese on my sandwich. Don't get my wrong it was good, and I would go back. However, for what you pay to get a "gourmet" grilled cheese sandwich, I was left feeling incomplete in my high expectations for this est. to be fair, they opened a few weeks ago, so there is plenty of time for the Heywood to find its stride. Practical stuff: trendy Silverlake so parking is very difficult. Meters are free after 8pm. The place gets packed with hungry cheese craved seekers and there is little seating to accommodate them all. The line starts in the back of the restaurant, not in the front, that is where you pay.

While at Heywood I overheard a gentleman say: "This sandwich is changing my Life!" Now, you're probably thinking: "That guy must live a superbly dull life." First off... RUDE. Secondly, his grilled cheese sandwich had BACON on it. So make sure you get all the facts in before you judge. But seriously? Cheesy goodness in your FACE. I suggest the: "Everything piled on top of EVERYTHING." Or, order from the Menu. (SHEEP.) It's all delicious, so it won't matter. I sampled the cheeses before deciding on a sandwich, and they're all tasty. They're brand-spanking-new, but they ARE working on getting some gluten free bread and creating some salads in addition to the sandwiches. They're open super-late on the weekends which is DOPE because beer and cheese go together like BEER and CHEESE. The staff is attractive. I mean nice. No, I totally meant attractive. (And nice.) DO IT! (A lot...)

Heaven. On. Earth. I had the Bill Clinton (vegan). Seriously, my eyes rolled to the back of my head. All I can do is think about its awesome goodness. My boyfriend had the classic, which he really enjoyed. I CANNOT wait to go back.

Can man survive on grilled cheese alone? No, that's why they invented the tomato soup to dip in. Nice call Heywood. Those two go hand in hand so why separate two such inseparable partners? The thick Texas style toast is probably my favorite part of the sandwich. The soup was a bit watery for my taste, but it's just personal preference. My biggest beef, or is it cheese in this case, is that the prices are a bit inflated. The grilled cheese sandwich with a small dipping cup of soup and a small side of greens will set you back close to $15, tax included. Lovely place, but could be lovelier in my pocket book if it was priced a few bucks lower. Great as a to go lunch or dinner, but remember you still have to wait for the sandwich to be grilled all the way through so don't expect to be exactly in and out.

So. Yum. I came with a couple friends and we split 3 sandwiches. The not-quite-a-classic, the caprese, and the Brie. (FYI, the Brie one is practically dessert. Really good, but you might want to share.) Also, in my opinion, all the sandwiches had just the right amount of cheese. Perhaps the owners changed the recipes? Anyway, I left stuffed, and since you get a little salad and tomato soup, I think the price is fair.

I kind of wanted to hate this place because of the people rhapsodizing over it and invoking the tired-ass "bacon" meme. I live in Silver Lake and I am fine with being called a hipster but I almost started to develop a little case of "hipster hate" while I was waiting in line. Good points: - The sandwich was very good. I got the "Bill Clinton's Epiphany" and it was quite good. I ate it fast, but I was full at the end. - Mexican Coke. - Tomato soup!! - Lark is next door, so after your Grilled Cheese with bacon you can hit the hipster-foodie trifecta with a cupcake. Bad Points: -I attempted to order tomato soup and was told "don't worry they all come with it." What I was not told is that they come with what can only be described as a thimbleful of tomato soup. It was almost comically tiny. I suppose it is meant for dipping and not as an actual soup portion? -I get that it's gourmet food and I don't mind paying for it. but $2 for a snack-sized bag of potato chips? Seriously? That's just gratuitous. -The line to order moved fast, but food prep was achingly slow. They had three people working, yet I only saw one order of sandwiches get made in what seemed like 15 minutes. -Despite being a pleasant evening outside, it was disgustingly hot inside. They have one of those A/C units with the hose which are just comically ineffective. They need to fix this before summer. -By the time we were done with our grilled cheeses Lark had closed. Summary: The food and the concept are good, but not so good that they will survive past the honeymoon phase, unless they tweak the experience a little. I really wanted to give it more like 3.5 stars, the 4 is based on the assumption they will improve things like the climate control and service speed.

Every time I've been here the food and service has been excellent! The soup compliments their sandwiches perfectly. I love that there's a little lightly dressed salad as well... but we all know the star of an afterschool special is the grilled cheese! Their sandwiches are uniquely paired flavors and deliciously crisped bread. I'll be back.... again... and again and again and again.

$14 for an ordinary grilled sandwich with a few things added to it that made the texture interesting but didn't do much for the taste. Also some good tomato soup, and a root beer. $14. No restrooms, only snarkiness about the issue. Was supposed to come with a salad. No salad tonight, didn't we tell you? (no). Sorry same price. We're open till 3 but we are going to start closing right now around you, just after 9. I won't be back.

Just came home from Lunch at Heywood. Currently in a delicious food coma. I had the Heywood. The cheese was amazing, the onions were perfect caramelized sweetness. It had a perfect crunchy crust and smooth melted cheese. My husband had the Muy Caliente and was in heaven. These guys are in a serious love affair with cheese and it shows. Be sure to grab a S'mores Bar. It was the perfect dessert to follow the grilled cheese.

Given that cheese and bread are my two favorite food groups, when my boyfriend and I stumbled across Heywood, I had to give it a try. The place was pretty crowded, but we were able to snag a table outside, which was perfect since we had our pup with us! We tried the muy caliente and the bon appetite brie and were not disappointed! Maybe they've changed their ratios since other yelpers have been here, because ours was LOADED up with cheesy goodness...it was almost too much cheese, almost! :) We shared both, which I highly recommend. The muy caliente was toasted to perfection with the perfect amount of creaminess and "caliente" (but I'm usually a medium spice kind of girl-so if you like it extra spicy, maybe ask for extra jalapenos). And the bon appetite was amazing for a "dessert" sandwich-perfectly sweet and rich. I would definitely recommend this place to other grilled cheese lovers out there! It's a great spot, with friendly staff, welcoming decor, and delicious food!

Just like mom used to make BUT much better! We tried 3 different sandwiches: all were great but my favorite was the " not quite a classic". Perfect! Bread was grilled to perfection , crispy on the top and soft and warm in the middle just oozing with a variety of great cheeses. The Bon appetite was perfect for desert- we shared that one. Only problem- as the sandwiches are all made to order I had to wait about 10 minutes to get served. First bite made it worth the wait.

FIRST BAD IMPRESSION. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE! I wanted to take my boyfriend out to lunch for his Birthday and he LOVES cheese. So, we heard about this place and he was dying to try it out. We walk in around 1:30PM. There was about 8 people eating there, nothing crazy or busy. NO ONE acknowledged us the whole time! My BF and I kept looking at their menu, not knowing what to order obviously looking confused. The dude in front of the cash register (who was RIGHT IN FRONT OF US) never even asked us if we needed help-- he just kept looking at receipts and punching numbers on the register like that was much more important than our business. So what did we do after not being helped? I simply said to my boyfriend (loud enough for the dude at the register to hear), "It's obviously too busy right now for anyone to help us." So, we left and went to Berlin Currywurst (German Street Food - Amazing.) Such a shame because we've seen the great reviews and really wanted to try it out, but the first impression we got both was terrible. To the owners: Please, train your staff to be a bit more welcoming and friendly.

I've been here twice and loved it! I had the Bon Appetite Brie which was amazing! I ordered the half sandwich with salad and it was the perfect portion size for me. I've also had the caprese with the tomato dip soup dipper which was also tasty. I have to go back soon to try their other sandwiches. Fyi they offer vegan cheese and butter. They also offer Gluten-Free bread!

I was in the Silverlake area after nailing a job interview and of course, my tummy started rumbling, so I wanted to try a salad and sandwich option. Cool thing is that this place has a sandwich, salad and soup combo for $6.50! Awesome deal! It's a fairly new place, so new that their bathroom is not even operational yet! But, not to worry, the tasty sandwiches with different aromas of cheeses like fontina, cheddar, monterrey jack, and mozzarella will distract that overactive bladder of yours. I ordered my lunch "to go" since I had another interview, and to my surprise, they pack the 1/2 a sandwich (I got the caprese which is yummy), a small sampling of a delicious, and flavorful tomato bisque with a side spring mix salad. All for $6.50, in a cute-looking bento box thingey...gourmet food at a reasonable cost. Visit this Cheese Shoppe - you won't be disappointed with the meal!

I was on my way to Berlin Currywurst and passed Heywood... the sandwich I had WAS AMAZING. I asked one of the waitstaff what she would get and she said the Muy Caliente was terrific. It was bigger than I thought with the perfect amount of cheese. I didn't think I would like cream cheese in my sandwich but it really balanced out the spice. It was fabulous. I loved the soup too, very creamy and flavorful. I bought a bag of chips and my total was $12.75. To those complaining about price - I would ask, are you aware when you buy a sandwich you are not just paying for the quality ingredients on your plate? You are also paying for the very pricey location where the restaurant is located, all the staff, insurance and about 100 other things I can't even think of. Your time complaining would be much better spent writing your favorite LA politician and asking why they put small businesses through hell opening up - I believe it took Heywood 6 - 8 months (maybe more?) to open - that is a lot of months with no income, paying rent and guess what? That makes sandwiches cost more. (Don't know anyone at Heywood, but have friends that opened a business in Echo Park). I'd rather pay $8 - $10 for a delicious, high quality, well crafted sandwich here than $7 for processed deli meat somewhere else. Can't do it every day but thought it was well worth it.

This place is so cute and small. I love the fancy decor and taped photographs. The food is amazing. I got the caprese last night when my friend and I decided to walk down sunset and walking into the first restaurant that was open at 1am. The cheese is so delicious and so flavorful, and it's not too greasy. I never thought I'd be that amazed with a grilled cheese. The tomato soup is also full of flavor unlike that bland Campbell's soup. I will definitely be returning!

Delicious! Loved the sandwich. I want another! Myself and a very pretty lady waited a very long time for this to open! My only real issue was the price. 9 bucks for a grilled cheese (and that was the "soft launch special" price. Way too expensive for grilled cheese!

This place is awesome. The Heywood Grilled Cheese was fantastic and simple, with English cheddar and caramelized onions. PERFECTION. The owner was super friendly and clearly wants to make his customers happy. I suggest that people who have an issue, just go and talk to the management (just don't be an ass--obviously)! I had also ordered the Truffle Shuffle, but was given the Italian Bleu Jeans on accident. I started taking a few bites and realized I was given the wrong one, but it was so good, I finished it anyway. I told the manager about the mix-up, just to give a heads up, and he insisted on giving us one for free (even though I had already eaten the entirety of the wrong order). Really nice, friendly guy. The sandwich plates come with a small cup of tomato soup. It was the perfect amount for dipping. Just enough, but not too much, so you weren't overwhelmed. It also came with a side salad, so you don't feel too guilty for indulging in fried cheese bread. I see people on here are complaining about price, but I paid $11 for that plate. A sandwich, small soup, small salad and I was stuffed! Great place, I will definitely be back.

Heywood is my dream restaurant. It was simply amazing. I love simple and good which is exactly what Heywood shoppe provides. Yes they are a little expensive but I think it is money well spent. Plus they allow you to do a half sandwich which is very reasonable at $6.50. Both my cousin and I got the Heywood since it was our first time and seemed to be the shoppe's classic. I was very indecisive and the two people working at the shop were very helpful. I LOVE grilled cheese and they have amazing options, quality cheese, vegan options, delicious breads, and delectable soup with each sandwich. I would probably eat there every day if I worked nearby. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because there is no bathroom and they charge $1.90 for a can of diet coke. You should really go now, it's amazing. And go next door for a cupcake.

Awesome neighborhood spot. My friend and I both got the half sandwich deal for $6.50, She got the Muy Caliente and I, the Bon Appetitie Brie. Surprisingly, the half sandwich was cut in 2. So I had half of a half of each which was a good amount of food and variety. I was a little skeptical going to a place with only grilled cheese but left happy with the service, food, and atmosphere.

I decided to go here a few weeks ago, and my first impression on the building itself was alright. Clean, neat, etc. Then of course I had to interact with the staff, which couldn't care less (apparently) if I was there or not. After ordering my sandwich, I was offered mediocre beverage choices and a sad little shot glass of off-brand tomato soup from what looked and tasted like it was from The Dollar General store. Portion size aside, the sandwich itself was about as mediocre as it gets. There wasn't nearly enough cheese, and more than half of it was burnt. I'm not implying it was darker than it should have been, I'm saying that it was charred. Overall the experience left a bitter taste in my mouth (literally), and I will not be recommending or returning to this establishment.

Yummy... yummy grilled cheeses!!!! My boyfriend brought me here one night as a pleasant surprise since he knows I love grilled cheeses. We had a Not quite a "Classic" with bacon and Caprese grilled cheese; both were really, really good and they're a healthy size sandwich. Very fresh tasting, the basil in the Caprese was crisp and the bacon in the not quite a "Classic" was perfectly cooked; they were both grilled to perfection. When we had went they didn't have the soup and salad that goes along with the sandwiches so they substituted the desserts for us instead. We tried both the cake monkey which was a red violet raspberry and a S'mores bar. My favorite was the cake monkey and my boyfriend enjoyed the S'mores bar. Parking is tricky we went on a Sunday in the late evening and had to circle around a couple times until we were able to snatch up a street parking spot. Hopefully when you stop in and grub up parking will be easier to come by.

I am obsessed with this place!!! It's the cutest, hole-in-the-wall restaurant off of Sunset. They only have about 10 things on the menu - and they are ALL grilled cheese. The menu includes gluten free items and the waitstaff are very knowledgeable about their products. I have brought at least 15 different people to experience Heywood and ALL of them agree that it gets 5 stars!

SO. GOOD. My friends were visiting me from out of town and passed this place on their way to my apartment in Los Feliz, so they insisted we go there for dinner. We did, and they discovered the tastiest place in Silver Lake! I got the spicy one with pepper jack cheese and it had just the perfect kick. Dip it in the tomato soup, and there you have the best grilled cheese experience of your life. Sometimes you just need that comfort food, and this place provides. You order at the counter before sitting down, so very casual and comfortable. We saw signs that it's open until 3am on the weekends, so those with post-bar drunchies, ENJOY.

I'm lactose intolerant, AND writing a review. My cousin and I stumbled into this place due to the "Grilled Cheese Shoppe" sign that was posted out on the sidewalk. Upon entering, to the right of the door I noticed a bowl of water, I immediately knew this was going to be a friendly establishment. Inside there isn't much decor going on. It's simple, clean, and smells delicious. I was greeted by a nice young man at the counter. My cousin and I opted to share a sandwich, lets face it times are tough no matter what you order. I expected the nice young man to be annoyed by my request, as most can be. He was not even the slightest annoyed, in fact he offered to make two plates. In this day and age that makes me happy, service will keep any place alive these days. We ordered the "Muy Caliente" served on sour dough, loaded with pepper jack cheese and fresh jalapenos. Now I am not one who cares for spicy materials in my sandwich, and honestly only ordered it cause I knew my little cousin was eyeing it the whole time. After a few minutes of dropping some 90's hip hop beats and discovering the other gentleman and his Air Max 90's(possibly the infrared edition). We were served our sandwich. *heaven on a paddle* this thing was delightful to say the least. not greasy, not burnt, just amazing zest all over my taste buds. This is a definite must try, the service was amazing, the food was delicious and the gentlemen that were there made this an excellent experience. AND AGAIN, they had 90's hip hop blaring in the background. Cheese? 90's hip hop? life doesn't get any better than that. It really doesn't. Try it. Love it. Yelp it.

As a true lover of cheese, I was wondering how a place could make the classic grilled cheese into a custom, delicious experience. Hat's off to you Heywood, I commend you for not only making a great sandwich with no skimping on the cheese (the more the merrier) as well as adding some nice touches- I mean a tomato soup dipper? Pure Genius. Making a comfort food- a custom comfort. Thanks! I'll be back.

This place wouldn't be such a turn off if the person taking your order doesn't automatically start preparing your food without washing his hands. Gross. The caprese grilled cheese sandwich is great, but honestly, after watching the only server wasnt stopping in between preparing sandwiches to ring other customers up and then resume to preparing food with bare hands and not washing his hands.

Really yummy spot! They do grilled cheese very well. I love the combinations and mini soup shot dippers. The hubby and I got the caprese and the heywood classic to share. I liked the caprese best. The only reason I knocked down a star, and I can't believe I'm saying this, is because our two sandwiches had too much cheese in them. I thought it overpowered the combination of all the flavors. I know that's what a grilled cheese is but it made it a little too much to stomach more than half and definitely a mess to eat. I love that they also give you a side salad with your grilled cheese so you almost feel like you're being a little healthy. Ha.

We were looking for a restaurant nearby that would satisfy the diverse tastes of our two-family group. Heywood certainly fit the bill: cheese for the dairy lovers, for the vegetarians, dairy free option for those who were nondairy (thank goodness we didn't have anyone with gluten issues!). We loved it so much we ate there several times during our week stay. I think my personal favorite was a grilled cheese with mozzarella, blue cheese, and walnut pesto. Portions are large so come hungry, share with a friend, or prepare to bring home for lunch the next day.

Been here twice, and really like it. The Heywood is a classic. I tried the Truffle Shuffle. This savory sandwich might not be to everyone's taste because it can be very pungent, but I enjoyed it a lot. But my fave so far is the Game Changer, because it truly is. Habanero jam, where've u been all my life? The tomato soup dipper is also very delicious. In short, looking forward to trying all their sandwiches!

Please note the google maps location listed on yelp is currently incorrect. It's actually further northwest on Sunset Blvd near the corner of Micheltorena St. I have been expectantly waiting for Heywood to open as new dining options in the Silverlake area are always welcomed. We tried two sandwiches: The Heywood was our favorite. The aged English cheddar was really good and paired nicely with the onion confit spread. The Bon Appetit Brie was a nice dessert option for sharing, but too sweet of a selection if you're looking for something savory. $9 is kind of a lot even for a gourmet grilled cheese. However, each sandwich does come with a simple, but nice mixed green salad. It also comes with a small cup of tomato soup, but unfortunately it was watery and unappetizing. The atmosphere is kind of thrift store, but hey, it's expensive opening a restaurant. I do hope they succeed and will come back to try more off the menu.

Great, tasty sandwiches! These grilled masterpieces are hand crafted, and you can tell they were serious when it came to combining the cheeses, toppings, and the bread. Excellent. I was able to try 1/2 (shared with a friend) of an Italian Bleu Jeans & Not Quite a Classic (plus maplewood bacon). The Italian Bleu Jeans (just read the description on the menu) was a clear favorite, with great surprisingly subtle flavor (considering the bleu cheese and the pesto -- great match!). Easy parking on the side street just north of the shop. Friendly staff were happy to answer all my questions.

I love the hipster decor and music. But let's face it, the sandwiches are just average. I mean, I make a better grilled cheese sandwich at home! (My fave: Challah and provolone.) There was waaay too much cheese. I guess you could call that generous, but it made the sandwich too greasy for me. The cheese overwhelmed the onion confit, which I could barely taste or even see. And if the soup is meant for dipping, I don't get why there are small diced vegetables in it; wouldn't they just be left behind?

Soooo good! I had the simple cheddar cheese grilled cheese, and the soup/salad was a nice surprise. Can't wait to try more!

I wish I could give 10 stars. This place makes the best grilled cheese Ive ever had. I always order the Bon Appetite Brie..the cheese is always insanely melty and cinnamon raison bread perfectly crispy toasted, oh and the fig spread on it is crazy good in the mix. Plus they give you a delicious dipper of tomato soup with plenty of yummy greens on the side. I am tempted to stop there ever time i drive by..thats how good it is. I have not tried anything else yet because I am hooked on that brie mmm. Its a cute little spot and they're always friendly and quick. I usually find street parking fairly easily as well. Once you try this place you will be hooked!

Calling all cheese+bread lovers: this place is all about grilled cheese AND they have a vegan grilled cheese sandwich - an ode to Bill Clinton. 'Nuff said. But, for those who appreciate details: * All sandwiches are served with a small cup of their rustic tomato soup. Perfect for dipping, 'cause that is whole reason for ordering tomato soup with grilled cheese. ** The front wall of the shoppe is a floor-to-ceiling window so you can get the experience of dinning outdoors without having to yell over the traffic or suck down the smog with your cucumber ice water. If the descriptions above are not convincing enough, the PUNGENT aroma of cheese when you walk in the door certainly will be. Go get you some.

The Heywood is possibly the most delicious grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had.

Had a craving for a good grilled cheese sandwich so I turned to my good companion yelp to lead the way. Came across Heywood during their grand re-opening. What a successful find. They offer a combo with half a grilled cheese sandwich, tomato soup and side salad. Everything was excellent! Prices are reasonable especially for the quality and portion size. Sandwiches are perfectly gooey and flavorful. The soup was the perfect compliment to their sandwiches and the salad had a great asian vinegarette. Open late night. Service is very helpful and friendly. I'll be back for sure. Parking is on the street.

My friend mentioned something to me about this place and their amazing grilled cheese sandwiches. So I grabbed my boyfriend and rushed over there as soon as we got off work. It's a small area but perfect for their type of business. The staff is always great even when they have a rush. Orders do take a while to complete (20 minute wait time) but it's totally worth it. They have a variety of cheeses and other goodies you can add like bacon, jalapenos, grilled onions and the list goes on! Your order comes with a small cup of their DELICIOUS tomato soup and yummy mixed-green salad. The sandwich I ordered was called the "muy cliente" I THINK that's what it was called, it came with jalapenos, tortilla chips and lots of melted cheese. Holy cow, the explosion of goodness was to die for! They melt the cheese to its gooey state and the sourdough bread was beautifully toasted. I had eaten half of it and I was already full. So bring your appetite! Heywood: it's a winner in my book, Now go eat there!

This high quality grilled cheesery calls itself a shoppe, not because it's a musty, old-timey store specializing in pickling jars, but because that extra P and E in the name to stand in for the timeless virtues of Quality and Value. When I rave about this place, people look at me a bit funny. Sure, maybe you can make grilled cheese at home, but do you have the same fine and vast selection of ingredients? And can you assemble them in such an original combination of ways? And if it's after midnight on a weekend after most places in the area are closed, do you really think your coordination is up to operating a potentially dangerous sandwich press -- all on your own? The staff is super friendly and always quick to recommend combinations to those who are unschooled in the ways of fried cheese, as well as point out the latest creations with those who have visited before. There are vegan options which is good for non cheese eaters, but the selections offered are even more compelling to me because they usually have gluten-free bread available - and sometimes even a variety. There is also a gf employee who has gone way out of her way to make sure that whatever I've ordered does not make my stomach inflate and make my gut look like a pregnant lady's. [personal note!] A very valuable addition to the neighborhood and well worth regular visits.

I really want to like this place as much of some of the other reviewers. To describe this place as "amazing", "magnificent", and "a slice of heaven" perplexes me. Our sandwiches were just ok. The soup was fine, the salad was fine. The sammie was bigger than I expected, but it was served barely warm, while my mate's was piping hot. And, it took way too long given the fact we were the only table. The place was clean. I'm not one to complain about price. Eating out is never cheap, this place included. But, "magnificent"? No.

Literally one of the best places I have been to in a long time! The food is organic and freshly prepared after you order! Prices are good and the taste is to die for, well, almost! Definitely a place to go on a rainy day for some grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup! I will most certainly be back!

Had the Heywood and it was delicious. Friend had the Truffle Shuffle and it was ok, but I didn't care for the white bread or bleu cheese on it. Also really wish they had actual tomato soup for a side/dipping. Other than that the staff was friendly and the wait after we ordered wasn't too long. Would definitely recommend this if you're in Silver Lake.

All grilled cheese, all the time! At least 8 different varieties to choose from, plus you can build-your-own. So if you like grilled cheese, this is your spot. The full-size sandwiches are huge, so I appreciate that you can order a half size. Full size are $11 and half's are $6.50, not bad. Each sandwich comes with a fresh baby greens salad, and a ramekin of tomato bisque for dipping. The bisque is DELISH! It definitely tasted homemade, and had chunks of tomato and what seemed like zucchini in it. Nice basil flavoring too. The breads are awesome, they are extremely fresh and crusty artisanal style (my group tried the sourdough and the wheat). The staff is nice and the interior is very clean. The -1 star is because it seemed to take a really long time to panini-grill up our 3 half-sandwiches (close to 15 min), even though we were the only customers in the place! Edit: I forgot to mention they give you a 10% discount the first time you check in on Yelp!

I had high hopes for this place... That being said, I'm not giving up and will probably be back at some point in the future. I realize they are VERY new and are still working on how to perfect all aspects of their business...or at least I hope so. I didn't order anything fancy...just the Cotswold grilled cheese. It was pretty good. Would have maybe liked a tad more cheese inside of it but the current amount wasn't too much to complain about. My date had the Caprese. That one was quite yummy as well...though seemed much cheesier than mine. **shakes fist** What I was most dissatisfied with was the soup and the salad that came with the sandwich. The soup might have been one of the most mediocre tomato soups I've ever had. It tasted like Chef Boyardee tomato sauce. (Zooey would be very disappointed!) The salad was pretty boring. I don't mind a simple side of greens...but please toss it with something that doesn't taste like generic Kraft dressing. When I go out to eat, and pay a certain price for things, I like to feel as if I'm paying that price because whatever I'm ordering, I don't have the ability to make or have the time to make at home. Based on this experience alone, I don't think the price I paid was fair for the overall quality of the meal. Other than the food, the ambiance was nice enough and the music was good. The employees were very friendly as well. I'm so happy to have a grilled cheese restaurant in my neighborhood, and want you to stick around, but you really gotta do something about that soup and salad! Maybe even add a little more cheese to the sandwich if you feel like it...

There are few things I love more than cheese so when I moved to the neighborhood, I knew I had to check this place out. I wasn't sure which sandwich to pick, they all look super tasty but I decided to go with the heywood. It was heaven. First of all, it's a huge sandwich (I ended up taking the second half home) which included onions but ever so slightly as I didn't mind them at all. The tomato soup was fantastic and I haven't eaten tomato soup since my mom forced me to in 4th grade. The guys working were pretty friendly and helpful also. I'd say five stars but that salad was mediocre. Just give me more cheese!

  • Dana L.

When I think of local neighborhood spots in Silverlake, 'Heywood' always comes to mind. The people here love their product and always make the sandwiches fresh to order. Each meal comes with a small salad and tomato soup dipping sauce that's killer. The atmosphere is lovely, the decor super sleek and fun. I love how they flirt with all sorts of soda brands. I'm convinced their on a hunt for the best bottled ginger beer. Give yourself a bit of wait time as they don't rush the prepping process. Who said grilled cheese had to be fast food anyway?

As a kid I always made grilled cheese sandwiches in the mornings. I thought I made the best grilled cheese in the world! That is...until I came to Heywood's. Then my childhood memories went out the window but that's okay because Heywood's was BOMB! I came here on a Dishcrawl tour and we got to try all of the sandwiches and they were all incredible! The Game-changer changed my game for sure. Seriously, the organic Raspberry Habanero jam they use on that sandwich brought a tear to my eye. That tear fell into my Tomato Bisque and I even that couldn't ruin the taste of the delicious soup. I'm so glad I went on the Dishcrawl tonight or else I would have never found this gem and I'd still be thinking I was the best grilled cheese maker in the world.

After running the reservoir, my friend and I walked in Heywood to experience this "exciting grilled cheese idea/experience". I've been waiting for this place to open for a while and was excited about it since I'm a grilled cheese fanatic. Red flag #1: their prices are not written down on the menu board. Why not? Because they are really expensive. $12+ for a sandwich? I'm no cheapo. I get it if the ambience was different, but a tiny shop where you order and pick up a la' subway? We got our sandwiches which seemed to be drenched in oil or butter. Either way, we both felt gross after we ate. Yes yes .. maybe the wrong place to go after working out.. .that's for sure. BUT...... My stomach is cramping!! And let's just say that my friend isn't doing so hot right now! Not at all. Due to how our stomachs feel right now, we felt we had to review it. Even if we didn't feel sick, I would say they should adjust their prices.

Spent 29 dollars on two sandwiches. A bag of chips. And a soda. Wouldn't have minded the price had the sandwiches been editable and not burnt. Who serves a black sandwich?! The place was also crawling with flies.I really wanted to like the grilled cheese shoppe. What a bummer!

What a gem of a place! The decor is an eye-catcher as soon as you walk in. Super cute vibe, even though it is a tiny place. One outdoor table, too bad not more but on kind of a busy street so understandable. Got the "muy caliente" grilled cheese which had jalapenos inside. Was splitting with a friend and they were nice enough to split it for us. Each half came with a small side of mixed greens, and a tiny helping of tasty tomato soup. Would def recommend to anyone in the area...worth a trip! Ultimate comfort food and reasonable prices for the food/quality! Can't wait to go back!

  • Zach F.

Decent. A little pricey. I would think that with the prices, and being a place that only sells grilled cheese, they would make a sandwich that was memorable, and so good you couldn't wait to be back. I've been several times, and would never make a trip just for one of their sandwiches, but do stop by when I happen to be walking by the place. Have tried several sandwiches, and most sounded better on paper than they actually were. The only one that stands out as exceeding my expectations is the "Game Changer"which has an amazing raspberry habanero jam on it.

Best grilled cheese of my life! High quality ingredients mean super delicious. The owner's amazing- super nice. He wants to make his clients happy so make sure to give him your feedback if there's anything you want to see different. My two suggestions: 1. ice tea and arnold palmers 2. a grilled cheese sandwich of the day (just the sammy) for $5 so all the peeps complaining below of the prices will stop complaining and come on in and help themselves to grilled cheese goodness

really great grilled cheese on fat Texas bread. The tomato soup was good as well but not as good as the variety of grilled cheese. The traditional American Grilled cheese was my fav but enjoyed most of the sandwiches.

A great idea for a restaurant, and executed almost perfectly. My favorite is the Heywood - aged English cheddar with caramelized onions melted PERFECTLY between two toasted pieces of sourdough. For light lunches, they offer a deal for half a sandwich and salad for like $7. Worth it, although the side salad is nothing special - just mixed greens and a mediocre balsamic vinagrette. The sandwich also can get a little oily, but it's worth it because the taste is incredible. Go the next time you're cruising on Sunset looking for a lunch spot.

  • Jessica Z.

Stopped by for a late dinner and fell in love. A little pricey but def worth it. I tried the Heywood sandwich with bacon and it was delicious. All the flavors melted together and the sourdough was toasted perfectly. Will come here often for those cheesy fixes.

I love grilled cheese and this place has a variety of sandwiches to choose from. I had the Bill Clinton epiphany and it was so good. Came with a side of salad and tomato soup that is used for dipping. I switched out the vegan cheddar cheese for pepper jack and it was just delish. The place is small and hipster looking. Also go before lunch so it doesn't get crowded. The place can fill up fast.

Mind blowing. Jalapeños, spicy jack, cream cheese spread for added mildness, crunchy tortilla chips for texture and a rich tomato bisque for dipping. I will be back tomorrow for the sweet brie sandwich and honey-cream soda pop. Btw, my half sandwich/soup/salad combo came to a whopping $5.44...snobs

So excited to try this place out.....wow were we disappointed. $33 for 2 sandwiches and 1 soda. One of the sandwiches was wrong and was returned for replacement. Waited an hour. Replacement never came. Soup was room temp, not a good thing. On the sandwich we did eat, there was hardly any cheese - that hurt. You shouldn't be asking "where's the cheese?" at a grilled cheese shop. The staff were very friendly, just seemed well out of their depth. If we were going to specialize in grilled cheese, we'd probably use a flat-top grill rather than some kind of press with very limited capacity. Went to Von's on the way home, bought bread, multiple cheeses and soup for $15, went home and made a great grilled cheese.

So delicious! I built my own since I'm a bit of a grilled cheese lover, and it was probably the best I've tasted. I got english cheddar with avacado and it was soooo good! They were clean, quick and friendly which doesn't happen often I've noticed at Silverlake restaurants. Also the salad I got with my meal was delicious, and so was the little cup of tomato bisque for dipping. I almost ordered more but I was full from the first. Would definitely go here again.

"How good could a grilled cheese sandwhich possibly be?" you may be asking yourself. Pretty incredible I'm here to tell you. Their signature "Heywood" was delicioso, but the "Muy Caliente" is where it's at. I want another one just thinking about it.

I was skeptical of $8-10 grilled cheeses at first but Heywood is grilled cheese perfection. Great selection of cheeses, breads, and add-ons like jalapeno jelly and good bacon. Each meal comes with a side salad and tomato soup. The salad's vinaigrette is fantastic. The tomato soup is always great as well.

Was pretty excited when I heard about this place since I love grilled cheese and it's open super late at night! Ended up going there for dinner one weekend with a friend. Got the Heywood and my friend got the Tres Truffle Shuffle. I love simplicity, but was incredibly underwhelmed by the quality. My grilled cheese was way too oily for some reason and the tiny portion of tomato soup they give tasted like a touched up Trader Joes tomato soup from the box. My friends truffle was pretty good (wish I got that instead) but the truffle taste felt like a last minute salting before serving. I liked the salad though. Overall, it was pretty good but honestly, no different than something you can make at home if you bought some quality ingredients (there's a cheese shop or two in Silverlake and a Trader Joes- and bam, you got yourself your ingredients). Environment was pretty clean and simple, but for some reason there was a lot of echoing and my friend and I could hear the couple sitting a few tables away from us. Can't imagine how loud it could get with more people in it. At some moments it got to the point where my friend and I couldn't even hear each other because the echoing got out of hand at one point. I understand the extra price for quality ingredients and location/ambience, but if you're gonna shell out about $12 on a meal go down the street to Blossom (Vietnamese) or the Food Lab (American) where you can actually taste the quality and love put into their food. The appeal of grilled cheese is alluring and enticing- but my experience here was everything but alluring and enticing. Maybe I went during an off hour? I'd come back- but not for a long while....

I dont know how this place has so many stars! First of all, the prices are not posted anywhere on their menu's on the wall...in my opinion $11.95 is WAY too steep for a grilled cheese sandwich that comes with 1/3 cup of tomato soup and lettuce garnish...SECOND the bread was so drenched in butter, it was hard to enjoy to yummy cheese&fillings...THIRD my friend and I both got sick afterwards :(..Don't go here unless you like very buttery/rich overpriced foods...sorry y'all

I came here while visiting vegas, my friend recommended that I eat here for lunch. Although a little hard to find at first this place is amazing! And definitely the best grilled cheese I've ever ate in my life! I ordered the truffle shuffle half a sandwich with the spring salad and tomato soup. The sandwich was perfection! The cheeses combined well with the truffle oil.(which was a little messy) but who cares when heaven is upon your lips! And the soup was beyond! Definitely need the recipe. It was thick and rich. The service is awesome the decor is awesome. Really cool chill place with great food. Oh yeah the grape soda is bomb too. Just go and check it out! Won't be dissatisfied.

I came here with my roommate Thursday afternoon around 4pm. The place was empty but don't let that deter you. I got the tres truffle shuffle which is a grilled cheese with three cheeses and truffle salt. It also comes with a garden salad and tomato soup. The grilled cheese was really delicious and well balanced-- the blue cheese was not overpowering and the sourdough bread was buttery. The salad was simple but perfectly dressed. The tomato soup was great-- but it was more of a roasted red pepper soup. I also got a bottle of Americana Root Beer to wash everything down. My roommate liked the Italian grilled cheese but thought it tasted like a cold pizza after awhile. I'd definitely come back-- especially since it's open late.

So, I've had a sandwich from there before, but it was a take out. This time I sat on one of their tables and waited for my Traditional Grilled Chesse, and I was disappointed. The cheese wasn't oozing as it's supposed to, and it seemed like it was re-heated instead of made fresh. It was tasty and still nice, but I was looking forward to more. The tomato soup was really good, and a perfect combination to the sandwich. I though it was a little pricy ($9, for sandwich and a can of coke), but still reasonable. Staff was nice and they gave me the 10% discount with first Yelp check-in which was nice.

I can make a mean grilled cheese. In fact I can make several different styles of badass grilled cheese in my own kitchen. When I usually do it, however, I dont have the gumption to make an individual serving of Tomato Soup and salad. And really, these days I rarely have the necessary ingredients that haven't gone bad all at once. At Heywood, they offer a wide range of grilled cheeses with tasty cheeses and add-ons. I can't wait to try them all. The best part? I don't have to make them. I had the Heywood and it was sublimely savory, especially when dipped in the Tomato soup. Yeah the drinks feel a bit pricey, but the water is free and generally quenches my thirst...but I couldnt resist the old school bottled Root Beer. Anyway, great sandwich, decent tomato soup, salad wasnt anything spectacular but wasnt horrible either, and yummy Root Beer in a bottle...all for under $15...I can't afford it all the time, but it sure hit the spot tonight. Hopefully be back soon.

Before I start I have to disclose that I actually have not eaten at this restaurant. I was really looking forward to it, even though every time I pass by the place is empty. Last night there was one table with customers and an empty space right in front. I quickly took it and ran inside. I needed to use the bathroom, but they told me I could not. They don't have a bathroom for customers and said I could use the bathroom at the bakery next door. I have a problem with businesses I'm patronizing telling me to use the bathroom of a business I'm not. I told them so and walked out.

They have catered 2 events for me now, and they've been great! We are vegetarian but need food that will keep non-vegetarians happy too, and this was the perfect thing. People RAVED about the grilled cheese sandwiches at/after each event. In fact, after the first event, we were having a lot of the same people back to the next one a few months later, and thought we'd have to do something different this time, but enough people asked (rather, demanded!) we have the grilled cheese back again, so we decided 'why not?' (great decision!). We had a few different types of sandwiches, salad, and soup dipper. They grilled the sandwiches fresh at the events. They brought little signs saying what was in each sandwich. They took care to be in touch to sort through the details prior to the events, including meeting with us in person too.

Had the Brie with fig spread on raisin bread. It was AMAZING! The soup was a surprise and so good I couldn't stop eating it when I thought I would just have a taste. Plus there were spring greens! Nice combo which tasted really, really good and didn't cost alot. I will be back! Need to try the Blue cheese one and also want to invent my own. And the Caprese looks like tasty. Getting hungry again just writing this review! Gourmet grilled cheese! Gotta love it!

Finally, a grilled cheese shop in L.A.?!?!? I heard the rumor, searched the interwebs, and found Heywood. I live in Venice, but made the cross-city drive after checking out the website. A comfortable yet tastefully-decorated restaurant awaits. I was greeted by the two hipster hotties behind the counter, Mel and Jordan, who patiently walked me through everything on the menu and suggested their favorites. I settled on the Bon Appetite Brie, a delicious piece of creamy melted Brie ad figs served on raisin-cinamon bread, with a side salad and a yummy bowl of tomato bisque for dipping. The meal was fantastic, and Mel and Jordan kept me smiling throughout with their funny banter with the other customers. Grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort food, and Heywood is the perfect environment in which to enjoy it. I'll be braving the 10-to-the-110-to-the-101-to-Sunset a lot more often now that Heywood is in my life.

I had been looking forward to this for weeks, and took my teens for an end-of-summer lunch out. One person had the classic; two others had sourdough and English cheddar, with bacon and tomato. Everything comes with a cup of tomato bisque and a salad. First of all, I'm writing this in August, which means that you can get ridiculously great tomatoes every day in a nearby farmers market, but the tomatoes on these sandwiches were pink and mealy. The mystery was solved when the Sysco delivery guy came in with the restaurant's order while we were sitting there. They get their tomatoes from Sysco!! Not only did he bring in flats of pink tomatoes, but crates of canned tomato bisque as well. Ugh. The salad was dressed, if you can call it that, since only some of the leaves were coated, with just lemon juice. I imagine they were thinking this would help cut the grease of the sandwich, but really it makes it downright unpleasant to eat. The bacon in the sandwiches was not thick and rustic like I had imagined, but thin and melty and not very flavorful, so that it made very little impression. The woman who took our order had a very difficult time comprehending what we wanted (three sandwiches, two of them halves). I had to repeat myself maybe four times. It was not a language barrier; she just wasn't following. On the plus side, the sandwiches were nice and crispy. In a city where you can get such great fresh food, the Heywood is a serious disappointment.

Warm prompt and friendly service, eclectic mix of tunes, fun and varied menu, friendly to kids and pets. I found our sandwiches to be a bit too cheesy. Yes I know they are grilled cheese but I found the portion size to be over the top. Even eating 1/2 sandwich found it too cheesy. A bit on the pricey side... maybe use less cheese and take it down a buck or two? Would LOVE it if they served a couple types of beer and wine to compliment the cheese. They do plan to add a kids menu, hopefully a wine menu will follow.

was really hoping for good, but i was a bit disappointed. for the prices on these grilled cheese sandwiches , i would expect homemade bread or at least bread from a delicious local bakery, but as far as i can tell, they use grocery store bought bread which (sorry to say) i could easily buy and use for making the same grilled cheese at home. also their tomato soup tasted like it came from canned. could be wrong about that, but if not, i would highly suggest they could attempt to make it from scratch. not that hard, and it would really elevate the sandwiches. cheese selection and mixes were good though. just fix the bread and soup!

i'd be lying if i said i didn't come to this place as often as possible to try everything. and... it's been great every time, sans the vegan or vegetarian grilled cheese or whatever it is i've had everything and have never ever been disappointed, go with a friend order 2 different things and split, you'll be glad.

We were first quite annoyed at a Too-Cool-for-School grilled cheese "shoppe" on Sunset in Silver Lake, made to prey on all the skinny girls who just want their comforting grilled cheese and tomato soup dippers, and would pay $12 plus tips for NO service for such a luxury. (As if this cannot be made at home.) But then we tried the place a few times, and we came to like it enough. That said, they don't serve anything else (fries would help), they don't have a bathroom, and one of the owners (or regular employees) is super-obnoxious, and we've had some weird situations with the employees too. Recently they started making their sandwiches a lot more thin, and the soup is now less flavorful as well. I think they're always empty and losing money. Probably because of the attitude and high prices/lack of services. Additionally, they add this "bruschetta" spread to their inside out (which is pronounced "broos-kett-ah" not "brushedduh" the way they incorrectly corrected me when I asked for them to not include it in my sandwich), and I feel like they're a little too precious and delicate for my business. Finding a place that will make a grilled cheese with good cheese is less-than-common, but you have to do more and be less cheap as well as bitchy, so feel free to send your $12 contribution for my restaurant consulting to my assistant, and maybe we'll be able to meet again at your place, provided there's a restroom and an employee who actually knows not to pronounce something correctly but not to correct someone when they actually do.

Sandwich is oozing with cheesy goodness!

Simply put good cheese, just nearly not enough of it. There is almost more bread than cheese. Portion of soup provided is approximately 6oz, generic tomato soup more so of a sauce for dipping than a portion of soup. Not terrible not anything extraordinary.

i love grilled cheese so i was passing by sunset and saw this and had to try this place. im very simple with my grilled cheese ive had the grilled cheese truck numerous times and i always just want cheese and bacon. i wasnt sure if this place would have it but they did but the bacon was a 2$ additional charge on a 9$ grilled cheese alone. they dont have soda fountains either. i usually like places that do, but they have a refridgerator with drinks that are mostly glass bottled sodas. my grilled cheese was good but not worth the price and the cabon was very thin. i wish it was more thick. i might stop to eat there every once in a while

Really great grilled cheese here. Like best sandwich I have EVER eaten. I got The Heywood and I was in HEAVEN, my husband got the Not Quite A Classic with bacon added. We both really loved our food and the staff is very nice, I have been there one other time when I didn't eat but hung with friends who were eating and the staff was really great that night, too. They are open CRAZY late which is nice. I know people keep complaining about the price but either I have lived in LA too long or I just go to places that are pricier because I didn't think anything of spending $30 on our 2 grilled cheese sandwiches (which come with a nice little cup of soup, enough to dip the whole sandwich in and have a few spoonfuls left over) and a little side salad and drinks, whatever, if you want a cheaper grilled cheese go to a crappy diner. The cheese they used was amazing and it was the perfect amount, I am a big fan now and am going back for dinner tonight as a matter of fact!

I was lucky enough to finally try this place during an LA visit....how I wish there was something this fabulous in the Bay Area! I had the Bon Appetite Brie....divine! The sweetness of the fig jam and the creaminess of the brie was such an excellent combo. Add to that the salad and a cup of delicious tomato soup, a real bargain. Great choices for every taste - a friend of ours is vegan and she was able to indulge too! Also, no meal is complete without a touch of sugar....and the s'more bars are NOT to be missed. Perfect way to top off a great meal! I will definitely be coming back next time I am in town, can't wait to try another delectable creation on the menu :)

I was extremely disappointed with Heywood's cuisine and service. I'm a little appalled that a grilled cheese sandwich costs $11.00, and it's quality CERTAINLY doesnt justify the price. Most upsetting was the awful service. I had gone to the restaurant with a friend and ordered the same sandwich IN FRONT of him on line. My sandwich was served twenty five minutes AFTER him with the aloof waitress drifting by to ask me "what did you order again?" every few minutes. When I finally did get my food, I was given no utensils as my friend was. Overall a shameful experience, enjoy the many other dining choices around silverlake instead.

HOLY SHIT! are you kidding me with this place!! It's aaaaaaamazing! Best grilled cheese i've EVER had. I would pay 20 bucks for this sandwich, luckily it's not that much. Great staff... cool space. I hope it stays forever. I had the caprese, super yummy. Also I don't know how they make their tomatoe soup but it's crazy good. I can't emphasize how great this place is without sounding like a total lunatic... That's how excited I am right now. Ha! Great job guys

I've been waiting and waiting for this Shoppe to open and it finally has! Boy am I in trouble. I went today and it was amazing!!! I had the caprese with pesto grilled cheese which came with tomato dipping sauce and salad. YUM! I live within walking distance so the will power that I had worked up passing Lark every day has just dropped drastically. So excited about the new addition to the neighborhood!!! Not to mention the staff and manager were super friendly and knowledgeable!

I love cheese - let's start with that. I've been the grilled cheese truck, and the grilled cheese restaurant in downtown Burbank, but this place is probably my favorite. Had the game changer (I think - the one with habanero strawberry jelly), and it was SO good. Also tried the Muy Caliente, which comes with jalapeno cheese, guacamole and tortilla chips, and I think I liked that one even more (the cheese was stronger.) The root beer wasn't my favorite (don't remember the brand, nor had I heard of it before - it was just too sweet), but overall, this place is great. Sandwich, small soup and side salad all around $12 - definitely worth checking out. Just give yourself extra time - parking can be difficult during lunch hours.

The only reason why this place got 4 stars and not 5 is because of the price. Now the food, delicious. I came here Saturday around 1am. First off, thanks for being open that late! The food is really good! I got the Heywood grilled cheese which comes with caramelized onions and cheddar cheese, served with salad and a tomato basil soup/dipping sauce. SOOOO yummy!! The sandwich is pretty big, so personally I was only able to eat half and took the other half to go. I would definitely come back here. If you're in the Silverlake area, try this place :)

I always order The Holy Grail sandwich with their side salad and tomato soup. On the pricier side, but hey, it's not a crime to splurge once in a while!

I tried this place once and I decided not to come back again. Nothing special with their grilled cheese, dipping soup and salad, that I can totally easily make them myself at home. I was expecting more because the review was quite good, don't understand why people loved it. Another thing was the reason why I was disappointed by their customer service, I ordered 10 grilled cheese to go. There was no one at the restaurant when I ordered, they weren't busy at all. When I paid for it, I didn't tip them because I thought it was take out order. Then the manager asked me to pay the tips. She told for a bigger order you are supposed to tip at least 10%. I told her I'm sorry I didn't know that, then I paid 10% tips. Then I realized who would ask that?! I may not know the rule well, but I felt weird someone asked for tips for take out order.

This is comfort food of the highest order! my two favorite are the Game Changer and the Heywood. The former for the more adventurous eater, and the latter for a traditional grilled cheese fan. The atmosphere is basic, not a lot of frills. Six or seven tables inside and two outside on the sidewalk - and while it doesn't sound like a lot of seating I've yet to come and not get a spot. The knocks: Street parking only. Prices are a little higher than you'd hope. Each sandwich is priced around $10 - so if you take a date and include drinks you're looking at almost $30, out the door, for grilled cheese.

The boyfriend was away so I picked a place for dinner that I knew he didn't care to checkout. Overpriced gourmet grilled cheese was that place, though as I read reviews I became more optimistic. Not surprising, the restaurant was empty at 9PM on a Tuesday. I was greeted by friendly staff members who gave me the run down and some suggestions. I made a face when they said they had gluten free bread. They responded, "for your friends if you have any gluten free friends" as they noticed my wince. The dining space is very cute and perfect for two. There are some seats outside for a perfect day. I ordered "Muy Caliente" which I think should be renamed to Somewhat Caliente. There was no spice or kick in the sandwich and I was quite shocked since Yelp! led me to that order. MORE SPICE!!! Luckily, my roommate, who was eating with me, split his "Game Changer." This grilled cheese sandwich was perfectly sweet and savory from the jam. It was delicious. I was satisfied, but not stuffed and the side salad and tomato dipper was a great balance. I would comeback to try the other sandwiches in the future if I ever feel like splurging on a meatless artisanal grilled cheese sandwich for more than 10$.

Quick update cause it's been like a year and a half. As planned, I have been back many times, and have tried nearly all (or maybe actually all, I don't know) of them. They all shred. 5 stars for sure. Nuff said.

Not what I was expecting, but then again, I'm not really sure what I was expecting exactly lol. It's literally a grilled cheese shop in Silver Lake. Street parking. It's a modern place with an old school feel if that makes sense. They have concoctions already thought up or you can make your own. I REALLY wanted the one with kimchi and short rib omg but they were out of short rib wahh. So I settle for the Peking Pig (picture posted). Forgot what kind of cheese but it had bacon AND prosciutto nomzz. Comes with a tomato soup "dipper" and salad. Everything is about $10-14. You order at the counter and they bring it out to you. I thought everything was good.. The sandwich was crispy and not soggy.. Perfect little dipper haha (although I wouldn't have minded an actual full soup.. And the salad had a light dressing. They also have old school soda pop bottles which is cute. This place was on my food list (forgot how I found it) so I'm glad I tried it. Not sure if I would trek out here but definitely if I'm anywhere near the area :)

I just pulled off the main road and parked at a curb to pray away the Hey (and its delicious Caprese grilled cheese sandwich with pesto sauce and olive bread). Alright, so after years of denial, I may have to grudgingly accept the fact that I am actually really and truly lactose intolerant. This pains me to admit, in more ways then one, since I've always assumed that lactose intolerance was something only weird, white people had, like a high credit score, or a LinkedIn account, but alas, it turns out that even the most exotic of creatures ( ie brown hair AND brown eyes) can be struck down by a cruel inability to digest cheese. CHEESE! I mean my god, is nothing sacred?!?! Damn you Zeus. Damn you to hell....also known as my insides. Seriously kids, my digestion system, in all of its mutinous glory, is staging a freaking coup right now. But the joke's on you colon, because this regime will never change!! OWWW ok my GOD, I surrender! Diary free it is, just please stop trying to hatch a dinosaur egg inside my heart! Sure, I currently want to die and yes, I am swimming in violent waves of nausea, but I still maintain that this grilled cheese sandwich was TOTALLY worth it. I mean, am I also fantasizing about polishing off a roll of TUMS and having my mommy sing me into a peaceful if not permanent slumber, because death no longer scares me??! Yes. Yes I am. Why? Is that not normal after ingesting 4 pounds of aged, pus filled teet juice from another species?? See, therein lies the magic of cheese, my friends. It can make you walk the nefarious boundary of life and death without needing to have Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston as your careless parents to get you there. (Too soon?) In the words of one Meg Ryan in the classic cinematic feature 'French Kiss', SPASM! SPASM! Ok, well that about sums it up. Um, Bon Appetit, I guess???

Came in today for the first time. While the cashier was chatting about yoga to the customer ahead of me, the sandwich dude welcomed me and talked about my options. So a star for good service! I went with the vegan option which is humorously titled Bill Clinton's Epiphany. 1 more star for creativity. The sandwich came out pretty quickly and the food was good. The only thing was that the tomato soup was too salty for my taste. Other than that a great tasting vegan sandwich. 2+stars!

I really hate to write low reviews for places that I truly love & stand by for years since they had opened up. After bringing several friends & converting them to this place I can say my disappointment now starts. 1st they get rid of my ultimate favorite & all my other friends as well fav the "Tre Truffle shuffle". Due to their cheese monger constantly raising the price on that specific cheese & the fact they don't wish to carry any bleu cheeses any longer. Ok understood. Next in replacement of the truffle shuffle I tried today their makeup version for it called the "Peking Pig" consists of French Comte, crispy prosciutto & Bacon on brioche. This fell flat & short. OMG 1st of all Salt galore, then no texture or counter balance of flavor. The prosciutto was not crispy at all neither was the bacon. A suggestion is to cook those prior to assembling the sandwich into the melt press to have them stay crunchy. Next I got my 2nd favorite "bon appetite brie" which they still carried & I was assured was the same. To my automatic palate distinction it was NOT the SAME. It used to come with this soft buttery amazing cinnamon raisin bread. Now it comes with this dense, thick, heavy semi flavorless fig bread. Way too much fig going on here since the sandwich itself has organic fig jam in it. Why fix something that wasn't broken? I ended up being in tears of sadness after too many bad things in one day. To top it off the girl forgot my whopping $4 cake monkey black & white ho ho. OF course I notice when I get home & I am not driving back in rush hour traffic 30 min to get it. I will give them another chance for another visit in the future. I hope they get their act together at least with the "bon appetite brie". I am still dying to try "Bill Clintons epiphany". I love the concept, the old food, & the place itself. I hope they are able to read this & take it into consideration.

Holy shit this place is ORGASMIC!!! Now, the prices are up there. It can be over $10 for a grilled cheese, but these my friends, are no basic grilled cheeses. They are insane! I really loved the Italian Bleu Jeans and the Heywood. The sandwiches come with a bit of tomato soup for dipping purposes which is fun. This place was opened super late, I think they close at 3am which made for the perfect munchies meal. Also, I really loved the bread, everything was delicious and the staff were really friendly and fun.

Yum. Parking at lunch time on a Saturday was easy to find at time-restricted meters on the street or there was unrestricted restricted parking in the surrounding neighborhood but be prepared to walk a few blocks. Also, pee ahead of time since there are no bathrooms (I recommend polishing off your sandwich with dessert next door at Lark and then using Lark's potty). I had the Game Changer with semi-spicy raspberry jam. It was sweet with a bit of a quick and I liked it. My friend had the Bon Appetite Brie and I tasted it. It was also good but much cheesier than mine. I might have gotten sick of the Bon Appetite Brie after awhile whereas I finished every bite of mine. The cheese in the Game Changer was a bit understated. I found it to be less greasy than any other grilled cheese I've had. The servers were friendly and accommodating, filling me in on the most popular dishes and their personal favorites.

We came here to get some grilled cheese and I don't think I was disappointed here. They made a mistake on our bill but the mistake was in our benefit, so the meal was that much sweeter. He knew his mistake and said it was cool. Bonus points! I had the Muy Caliente which has fontina and spicy jack cheese plus jalapeños, cream cheese, tortilla chips on sourdough bread. Yummy grilled cheese. Very gourmet. I don't know much about cheese but the cheese was nice and ooeey gooey. The star of the meal would have to be the tomato soup that comes with it. I liked it a lot. It wasn't too creamy at all. There was still a tomato taste but not overpowering. My muy caliente was kicked up a notch once dipped into the soup. The salad that came with was just pure decoration in my taste. Nothing special. I'd get a cup of the soup alone. I like that they have the option to have half a sandwich. Great option for a light lunch even late night. -Give it a try! P.s.: Parking can be a pain. Making sure to read the signs.

My boyfriend and I have been coming here for a while and everytime we come the food is delicious, the staff is very nice, the ambience is perfect. Its very intimate and homey. I always get the caprese grilled cheese with added avocado...heaven! They don't have a bathroom but on the bright side the place next door does and they don't mind if you use it! Theres a few tables inside but there is also one table outside for all the beautiful days we have in LA! All in all i love this place.....class in a grilled cheese!

Grilled cheese is grilled cheese. You can't really mess that up, unless you're not using cheese or bread. We came here on a last minute Yelp find because everywhere else we wanted to go was an hour wait on a Tuesday night. Really, Silver Lake? Really? Don't even mention the ridiculous parking situation. First off, I understand this is gourmet grilled cheese shop. $11-$12 is just about the border for how much I would pay for something I could make at home. So, I decided to try the sweet grilled cheese with brie and fig jam on cinnamon bread. Then the girl told me that their cinnamon bread is like way smaller than their regular bread, so for the same price, I'd be getting less food. Hrm.. OK, well, considering I just spent half an hour within a 5 mile radius looking for parking and am starving, I'm going to switch my order and get a regular sized grilled cheese. So, I got their Heywood grilled cheese with caramelized onion and aged cheddar. Very tasty, not bad, but why would I pay $11 for this again when I can make it at home in five minutes? Just saying, it's a decent grilled cheese, but I think I can live without it.

I'd been dying to try this place for a while now and I'm so glad I finally did. It's probably one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. Staff was very friendly and attentive. But what was most surprising, was the soup it came with to dip in. I'm usually not one to really care for tomato soup when I'm having grilled cheese, but this one was amazing! So flavorful and didn't have that "plain tomato sauce" taste most tomato soups do. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars however was because it was pretty overpriced for cheese between slices of bread. But worth it. So so worth it.

    (4)

WORTH THE CHEAT DAY!!!!!! I usually create my own. But the menu items are delicious too. It's rare to find a grilled cheese place that also has an amazing tomato soup to paid it with, but Haywood nailed it.

  • Bill W.

Don't eat here. Complete waste of time and money. If you like your grilled cheese with more than one slice of cheese, flavor, and no hipster attitude from the staff, go elsewhere. Or, better yet, make your own at home. It's pretty hard to screw up a classic comfort food, but this place figured out how.

  • Cindy B.

I passed this place ever since it opened and finally decided to give it a try one afternoon when I heard that they had gluten free bread. I ordered to go and was hoping it would be good after paying $14 for the basic one. On the way home I wondered why the box felt warm on one side and cold on the other. I was so happy to open the box and see a side salad with dressing. And even happier to see a cute container of tomato soup for dipping. Sandwich was cut in 2 slices and wrapped separately so I saved half for lunch the next day. The sandwich was cheesy goodness, the gliten free bread was really good and soft but held up nicely, the soup was delicious and the side salad made me feel healthy to add some greens to this indulgence. Yum yum yum.

If you are looking for your basic grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup, you won't find that here. If you do go, you will find super yummy offerings. I was able to sample three of the sandwiches: Caprese (mozzarella, tomato, basil, and walnut pesto on rosemary bread), The Holy Grail (braised short ribs with kim chee and smoked gouda on brioche), and The Peking Pig (crispy prosciutto, maple bacon, and a French cheese on brioche). They were all so good, but the Holy Grail was the hands down winner. Each sandwich came with a little soup and side salad. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in town.

Grilled cheese is one of those foods that I consume usually when I'm seeking comfort, hence it being a comfort food. Tomato soup, I generally don't have tomato soup unless I'm having grilled cheese. Part of the reason is of my lactose intolerance. Heywood is a God sent for us lactose intolerant. A place that offers a huge variety of grilled cheeses, an artisan grilled cheese shop if you will that offers a sanctuary by carrying vegan cheese that they are more than willing to replace with traditional cheeses in any of their grilled cheese sandwiches. I went with the traditional The Heywood vegan style. Great flavor profiles. A bit savory, but also a bit sweet...an excellent mixture. It wasn't greasy like many grilled cheeses have a tendency to become. The grilled cheese comes with a side of arugula salad dressed with a vinaigrette. The bread is crisp to a point and offers the texture needed. The tomato soup unfortunately is not vegan. It's more of a bisque than soup, but I asked for a small cup to sample and combined with the sandwich it was excellent. Note that they now have extended hours so you can have your grilled cheese needs met almost anytime of the day.

I've been wanting to try this spot for over 8 months. Let me tell you it did not disappoint! The combination of taste and portion led to serious satisfaction. The staff was friendly and helpful with my indecisiveness; I opted for the more traditional "The Heywood" while my friend couldn't resist the smokin "Muy Caliente." Holy wow! We both also opted for more soup as our side (versus salad and soup) . This tomato red pepper bisque was the perfect dipping pair of goodness for my grilled cheese. I look forward to returning!

I Love Heywood. I never thought a grilled cheese place could have so many different yummy options. Bill clinton is YUMMY. My fave though is the 1/2 classic lunch special. Half regular cheese sandwich, salad and dipping sauce. But PLEASE!!!!! bring back that chunky tomato soup you used to have 6 months ago. That made me love tomato soup! I dont get why its gone. It was the best! If you wont sell it anymore ill buy the recipe. PLEASE!

This place is good. That's it. Good. I'm not going to overhype it for people nor am I going to make it sound like it's the most disgusting thing ever. It's definitely not disgusting. It's tasty. I think the thing that's holding me back is the price. I get it, Silverlake, you're fucking cool, but do I really need to pay $12 for gourmet melted cheese in between two slices of organic bread? I can go down the street to The Cheese Store, buy yummy stinky cheese and panini press that sucker between two pieces of sourdough and I would spend half of what I would pay at Heywood. But Hey, I would come here again because after a night of partying, this place is still open. $12 grilled cheese to go with my $12 cocktail in my belly.

I have wanted to try Heywood for well over a year, and today was the day. My first visit was...delightful. I will happily return. FOOD They have about 10 grilled cheese variations from which to choose, including a vegan option and gluten free options. They also have a soup of the day and one or two salads available. Note: the sandwiches come with a small, simple salad and a small cup of soup of the day. Honestly, I didn't notice if there was a dessert menu, and i think the beverage selection is limited to bottles in their glass case. There is a tray in the restaurant's corner containing self-service water. I ordered the Peking Pig Grilled Cheese $13 French comte with crispy prosciutto and maple bacon between two slices of brioche. It was delicious. My friend ordered the Game Changer Grilled Cheese $12 English double-gloucester grilled into a sourdough bread with organic, homemade raspberry habanero jam. This was wonderful. The raspberry habanero jam added such a nice flavor. As I looked up at the chalkboard menu and re-read the options, I realized that I would want to try almost every one. (I'll pass on the one with vegan cheese though.) Portion sizes are average. For me, my sandwich and the accompanying salad and soup did not completely satiate me. But I'm a fatty; normal sized people might leave satisfied. :-) Next time, I'd probably order two sandwiches and take half of one home. SERVICE The two gentlemen working when I visited were great -- very friendly. It was nice to meet them. SEATING This is a somewhat narrow shop with about four or five two-person tables against the wall, and about three or four four person tables. I mention this only to advise that if you're coming with a group of more than four people, it might be challenging to find seating. I visited at 4:30 pm on a Saturday; my friend and I were the only two in the place since this was not a peak time, but I'm guessing this place is packed at lunch and perhaps at dinner time. (There are also two two-person tables outside in front on Sunset Blvd.) PARKING Dreadful. It's street parking only here, and in Silver Lake, that's hit or miss. Today, it was miss. I had to park up the street a block away. NUTSHELL Yummy. Friendly service. Fair prices. I look forward to trying other options in the future. Four stars.

You can get a full size soup if you opt out of the side salad. That's what I did - 9$ for the the vintage sandwich and a full soup, I don't think that's a bad deal. It's really good food! Grilled cheese perfected with a home made tomato soup, yum!

Deeeeeeelicious! Heywood does grilled cheese right (and how could you not if you're called A Grilled Cheese Shoppe?)! You are greeted by super friendly grillmasters as you approach the prep area to put your order in. You're then given a number and the freedom to sit wherever you want (it's not a big place FYI). During our first visit, my husband and I both ordered THE HEYWOOD (A 2 year aged English cheddar with a carmelized onion confit spread onto a sourdough bread) + bacon. All sandwiches come with a small cup of soup and a side salad with balsamic vinaigrette which are the perfect compliments to the flavorful, creamy and crunchy, comforting sandwich! I'm currently pregnant so I can't have certain cheeses for a while, so I'm definitely looking forward to the next visit so I can have a new and delicious cheesy experience!

Ummm! Yes! Who dosn't have the guilty pleasure of loving grilled chesse? I know I do,plus it comes with tomato soup and a salad so it dosn't get better than that. I got the inside out sandwich. This was where the cheese was grilled a little on the outside. I have always tried to create something like this at home as the crispy cheese is one I really love and Heywood really hit the spot with this. The cheese was excellent and creamy but not overdone. The whole meal cost 12$ which isn't bad for the amount of food you get. Plus I hear there is a happy hour from 4-6 during weekdays, with this knowledge and the place being a block from me I can see this being a deadly destination for me.

Huz and I make a mean grilled-cheese, so when friends suggested that we try our Heywood, we were a bit hesitant. We could make sandwiches at home for a quarter of the price... Yeah, well, the sandwiches at Heywood aren't your average sandwich. They are magnificent. Worth every freakin' calorie. Dude, I wasn't even hungry when I walked in - to say the least. But the moment I bit into my half of our Game Changer sandwich, I was sold. YUM!!! Not a complaint to be had about our sandwich. It was served on a wood platter alongside a tomato dipper (think super thick tomato bisque) and side of mixed greens. YUM! Planning to spread homemade habanero jam on everything from here on out. Heywood, I will be back. Beware. I am a lactard.

Good grilled cheese sandwich, they allowed me to alter the one I wanted without a problem. The sandwich comes with a "dipper" of an amazing chunky, creamy tomato soup but I opted out of the salad and upsized the soup at no charge. Drinks come in a can or bottle but with the richness of the cheese and soup, the lemon, basil water was perfect.

Grilled cheese sandwich was great-- had the Brie sandwich. The price was a bit steep but I would go back to try another sandwich type. ***warning***This restaurant does not have a restroom for customers!!

A shop dedicated to the comfort food classic, this place does more with two pieces of bread and a chunk of cheese than you would ever expect possible. While the prices might seem a bit high, the sandwiches are made from amazing artisanal cheeses, rustic breads, and are served with a side salad and dip cup of tomato soup of such high quality you'd never expect to find them in a place devoted solely to cheese sandwiches. In fact, the tomato soup itself is unlike any I've ever had as I normally can't even choke most tomato soups down but I crave this soup day after day. If you want to find the best grilled cheese in the city, you could search far and wide and but my guess is you will never find any better than here.

I paid $10 for a grilled cheese sandwich, and I'm okay with that. In fact, I would do it again. This isn't your run of the mill grilled cheese sandwich made with Wonderbread and Kraft slices. Uh-uh. These sandwiches are GOURMET, darling. I had the Muy Caliente. A spicy sandwich made with jack and fontina cheeses, tortilla strips, and jalapeno slices grilled together perfectly on sourdough bread. I can't describe how perfectly crisp the bread was, perfect for dipping into the cup of tomato soup that comes with it. There was just enough soup for me to dip before every bite. I don't live on this side of town anymore, but I can't wait for necessity to bring me back out this way so I can lunch here again.

If you're a cheese lover like me and enjoy creating your own sandwiches, then you definitely need to try this place. There is a nice selection of sandwiches to choose from but the "make your own" option is ideal. They have a list of good quality ingredients to make your own perfect grilled cheese. Plus it comes with soup (had Tomato Bisque, perfect for dipping) and salad (tasty greens with enough dressing). I plan on going back!

OMG BEST GRILLED CHEESES EVAR. Go to the website, I've had most of the sandwiches there. They are all hefty, the tomato soups amazing, and the mixed green salad helps me feel not so guilty. If you got a place in your heart for cheese, then they have a seat for you at Heywood.

Finally made it. I tried the heywood, which I absolutely loved. It was gooey and so delicious. Perfectly grilled. My sister tried the classic with jalapenos. It was okay. Can't wait to try the other choices. Tomato soup was just the right size. I ordered a full sandwhich but ended up taking my half home. Perfect location to have lunch and pick up dessert next door at Lark. Parking is a hassel, especially on a Saturday afternoon because they have a flea market over one block. If you find parking a great idea to browse the market as well. enjoy!

After some passive prodding from my girlfriend, I thought I'd check this place out. Now I love to eat animals: Mainly cows, chicken, and fish. Thus, I was initially a bit disappointed when I saw no glaring meat option. But, then again, it is a grilled cheese sandwich; thus, I decided on a Muy Caliente. It was rather large and came with a salad which actually tasted better than most other salads that are used as dish fillers. This salad was actually part of the meal. Also, the tomato soup was awesome. It's not the lame red kind, like Campbell's (apologies to Campbell's, it's still great for other times). This was orange and creamy. Did they add cream? Whatever it was, it was delicious and exactly the right amount: From memory, I'd say about 1/2 - 3/4 of a cup. I used it as a dip for my grilled cheese. The grilled cheese was also made to perfection, not too much cheese or oil but definitely did not feel lacking in anything. Also there was a perfect amount of heat (for me). Not enough to reach for a cup of water, but enough to tingle those taste buds. My girlfriend got half a soup and sandwich, if I recall correctly. You can also do halves like that. All in all, I loved it and will show up again on some slow afternoon in the near future.

Is there such a thing as grilled cheese nirvana? I think so. I was slightly concerned about an $11 grilled cheese, but you get what you pay for. It was great, the portions were enough for two people and you get a healthy salad to boot. Staff was friendly and my food was ready when I arrived ( I pre-ordered) If I had to list one minus -- the parking. Trendy places like Silverlake have lousy parking. But if you find a spot you get grilled cheese nirvana.

A grilled cheese is never as good as it is at home, but this place is close. My wife got me that last thing I would ever have ordered for myself--a jalapeno, cream cheese, tortilla chip grilled cheese--but it was still pretty good. Although it should have cost about $8, but was $11! The place suffers a bit from having a Valley vibe: a bit too Home Depot-clean, crappy and contrived soft jazz playing, and heavy dark chairs and tables likely purchased from a place called "Furniture Liquidators" or Sam's Club (the type of design that your suburbanite mother-in-law who thinks she is hip because she wants to live in a new condo would advocate). But I will go again anyway. It is in a cool little strip of Sunset... a perfect place to sit and get away without getting too far away.

Ok lets start off with: if you told me a few months ago that a grilled cheese sandwich was going to cost me 9-13 dollars plus tax, I would of calmly told you to F*ck off. I came here with friends for dinner and I didn't get why everyone was making a big fuss over this place. That was until I took a bite out of the Heywood. It was perfect! the tomato soup complemented the taste so well and the salad helped all that cheesy buttery goodness down. I was in food coma heaven. The staff was helpful and honest; suggested my friend to try a tea that "tasted like campfire".... it actually did. Its not for everyone, but he seemed to enjoy it. I will be back. SOON. Cause that sandwich is still on my mind.

Upon entering Heywood: A Gourmet Grilled Cheese Shoppe, my olfactory senses heighten. A sweet aroma of sharp cheddar and melting butter fills the small sandwich shop. While all of their sandwiches sound delectable, I order their specialty, "The Heywood:" a grilled cheese with two-year aged English cheddar and caramelized onion confit between pieces of sourdough bread. I also order mine "inside out," with additional toasted cheddar on the outside of the bread. Other sandwiches include blue and Fontina cheeses, truffle oil and even homemade habanero jam. The "Bon Appetite Brie" has a triple creme French brie melted into cinnamon infused raisin bread with an organic fig jam and topped with raspberry sugar crystals. My Heywood grilled cheese is perfectly constructed. Caramelized onions add sweetness to balance out the sharpness of the cheddar. Ordering mine "inside out" was definitely a good decision. The added crispiness brings a whole new layer of well balanced texture and compliments the sourdough well. The soup is clearly not an afterthought, with hints of red bell pepper and garlic that add an extra trace of tanginess. I dunk my sandwich in, and the two create a masterpiece of perfectly balanced flavors. While my Heywood was flawless, the Caprese grilled cheese that I sampled was not. The dish was bland and tasted more like a glob of mozzarella with uncooked tomatoes rather than a freshly prepared Italian-inspired panini. Fortunately, vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free folks can also enjoy these tasty treats. Heywood boasts vegan cheese, gluten-free bread and even dairy-free, vegan-friendly butter. For around $11 anyone can come grab a bite at Heywood, even in the wee hours of the morning. For those attending shows at any of the nearby venues in Silver Lake, grilled cheeses are available Thursday through Sunday until 3 a.m.

If it's your first time, go for the Heywood. It's probably one of the best grilled cheeses I've ever had. Granted, I usually just make my own sammies at home, so the idea of a gourmet grilled cheese is heavenly by itself. Sammie comes with a side salad and amazingly thick, cheesy tomato soup. Takes about 10 minutes to make so if you have to run, order ahead. Open super late on weekends too!

I love this place. If you ever watched Parks and Recreation and wanted something similar to 'Thee best grilled cheese' (i.e. Andy's Bucket List) then you've found the place. There are so many cheeses that they utilized. Smoked, Aged, Blue....dear god. Amazing. And with perfect sandwich of cheezy proportions, you also can elect to get a nice tomato bisque soup and salad all for a totally reasonable price. I would go here a lot more often if i lived in the area but I can't. SO GO FOR ME! GO NOW! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

I was headed to "Tarascos" which is just a few doors down from this place for some Cochinita Pibil but decided to come check this place out since it was new. The name Heywood was inspired by the biggest cheese lover they could find, or at least the most eloquent one. John Heywood wrote his ode to cheese in 1906, comparing cheese to books. Just as each of us takes away a slightly different message/meaning/tone from a novel, so it is with cheese. Ever multifaceted, cheese is a thing of delicious beauty that they hope to pay proper homage to with their gourmet sandwiches. Muy Caliente ($12) - yelp.com/biz_photos/HLNy… Sourdough bread, Fontina and Spicy Jack Cheese, Jalapeno slices and Cream Cheese with strips of Tortilla Chips. Added Bacon (+$2) = ($14) Muy Caliente w/added Bacon - yelp.com/biz_photos/HLNy… First off $14 for a Sandwich!, Really?..... The sourdough bread was grilled beautifully, and although I didn't notice nor taste the cream cheese it was a good tasting sandwich, for the price I thought it should have had more cheese, little black/blue and red corn tortilla strips I think were there just for color, a few de-veined and seeded jalapeno strips I wouldn't call this muy caliente yelp.com/biz_photos/HLNy… ($2) to add Bacon that was disappointing, this is a gourmet sandwich shop and the bacon was a low quality thin and small strip, not worthy of a gourmet sandwich. Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are (( $9 to $13 )) Only Meat you can ADD is Bacon ( $2 ) additional charge. All Sandwiches come with a mix green salad w/ a nice dressing and a tiny container of Spiced Tomato Soup yelp.com/biz_photos/HLNy… for dipping, it was Very Good!. Overall the Sandwich needed more CHEESE especially for the prices you're charging, Bacon you need a thicker cut quality bacon. Is this Sandwich really worth $14...... I guess that's the BIG? Good Taste VS Price = 2-Stars

Food was overpriced and mediocre. Didn't help that we waited about 20 minutes for our food to come out only to have it go out to the wrong table. When the waitress realized the order was wrong, instead of going over to take the food away from the table it was given it to, she starts wiping down dirty tables! All in all, bad service, inconsiderate waitstaff and overpriced food. Won't be back.

So, I went there today for the "famous" Heywood grilled cheese sandwich. I should have known better than to fall for this $12 gimmick. Yes, it was grilled cheese on toast, but it was totally tasteless. Any deli or other sandwich place (such as Johnny Rockets) makes a much less expensive and tastier version. The best, in my opinion, was the one made on two giant slices of rye bread at Cassels Burgers--supposed to return from the dead--we will see. I would pass on the Heywood.

After driving down Sunset Blvd, I spotted that the store next to Lark was replaced with a new grilled cheese shoppe. I love grilled cheese and knew I had to try it at least since I live so close by. I came here with my bf, brother and sister-in-law since we were all in the mood for sandwiches on a Friday night. We were surprised that it wasn't busy and we didn't have to wait in line. My sister-in-law and I tried the Heywood and we both were very impressed. We both enjoyed that the sandwich had a good thickness to it and the caramelized onions did make a difference in the overall flavor. It gave that extra mmm.. factor. :) The sandwiches come with a small amount of spring mix salad with light dressing and a small salsa-sized (like the one from Baja Fresh) cup filled with tomato soup. The soup was a nice addition for the occasional dipping of the grilled cheese. To accompany all of our sandwiches, we all downed it with their various selections of bottled sodas from Mexican coke to Honey Cream soda. They also offer free water with lemon in a nice water jug for free if you don't feel like having soda. I would like to come back and try some of their other sandwich offerings although the sandwiches are on the pricey side. They range from ($9-$13) and that's depending on what other toppings you want you to add to your sandwich. We didn't have any trouble finding a parking spot, but I can bet that it would be difficult to find a spot during weekends or peak hours. But I do recommend you give this place a try to fulfill your sandwich cravings.

The caprese grilled cheese was the second best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had in my entire life (second to Devilicious' lobster grilled cheese). There's something about grilled cheese, a tomato bisque dipper, and a light mixed salad that puts one in a good mood. OK, so maybe this place is a little overpriced (for grilled cheese) and it's location is a little bit tricky, but if you're in the area and are in the mood for a good sandwich, this is the place you need to go.

I've passed by this place a million times and finally got to try. I went with the half a heywood. It was very large considering it was only a half. It came with a fresh side salad and tomato dip which were a great addition. The sandwich had cheddar and some jam, though I could barely taste the jam. I wish there was a bit more. Overall, the service was friendly and the place is clean and offers free water in the corner.

Yes this place is the best! Grilled cheese is probably my favorite thing to splurge on and Im so happy I found this place to do exactly that. I love how your grilled cheese comes with a delicious salad and a little cup of tomato soup. Every time I'm in the area I always stop in!

Kinda pricy but kinda great too. Staff shortages can lend to a wait, but I admit, it's worth it. Who knew that grilled cheese could be done so many ways? Not me. Next door is Lark, my lovely dessert. These two side by side is a delish lunch treat!!!!

I should have known better, when I walked in and saw the "trying way too hard" decor, but against better judgement, we ordered a couple of sandwiches anyway. Let's just say the salad was better than the grilled cheese. We both ordered the "Heywood" thinking it sounded quite appealing, but unfortunately, it was largely an unfulfilled promise. What claimed to be 2-year-old cheddar was quite lacking in flavor, though well-melted. The side of tomato soup tasted a lot more like pizza sauce, and when combined with the bland cheese and bread, the pizza-ness was impossible to miss. An oddly bland and pizza-like grilled cheese sandwich was not what I expected for $11. Perhaps some of their other creations are better, but I would have expected their namesake menu item to deliver the goods. Add in further annoyances, like the tepid drinking water, obnoxious patrons, and inconvenient parking, and I definitely won't bother again. And to add insult to injury, my girlfriend was sick all night following our meal.

Welcome to the neighborhood Heywood! After two rounds of grilled cheese goodness for lunch and dinner today, I can honestly say that Heywood won me over! Seems like the Micheltorena strip of Sunset Junction is becoming THE place to indulge every foodie in L.A with Lark right next door too. For lunch I had the Heywood, and that caramelized onion spread on that cheddar was pretty tasty. Did I mention it also came with a decent portion side of a mixed green salad and some soup to dip your grilled cheese with?! Perfect balance and very filling. For Dinner I opted out for the sweeter grilled cheese and oh what a fantastic choice did I make! The brie is a triple creme brie that came with fig jam and topped with raspberry sprinkles on a cinnamon infused raisin bread! Mine was super crispy and it was dessert heaven. Orgasmic worthy even. I highly recommend getting this one if you come with friends so you can at least try it. I guarantee you'll love it. The other choices sound pretty amazing too and they'll have more come opening day! Sure hope to see topping options like tomatos, etc. They also promised to have gluten-free and vegan options next time, so don't fret they are thinking about the vegans too. The place is very quaint and very welcoming. Reminds me of that lemonade summer stand that you just can't help but stop and try out. Staff is super nice and I will agree that the music they played was definitely what the Silverlake community will appreciate. Where's the grilled cheesus?!

Good food, great service. I had the half sandwich special that came with tomato soup and a side salad. I ordered "The Heywood" (sharp English cheddar and caramelized onion spread on sourdough bread). It was crunchy, gooey, and paired awesomely with the salad dressed by a sweet balsamic vinagrette. The tomato soup tasted like it had a Mexican flare which I was not very fond of. It wasn't bad, but I was more in the mood for an American rendition of Campbell's to instill that warm nostalgia associated with eating a grilled cheese that we all love. Some people whine about it being overpriced, but not only are they using high quality ingredients, they also have above and beyond service. If it wasn't for the quality and the friendly gentleman behind the counter, I would have given this place 3 stars. Next time you pass by, check it out!

Mmmmm..... ooey gooey cheesy goodness!!!! Close to $11 a sandwich prices seem a little steep for grilled cheese but it's worth it. The employees are super helpful & friendly, the sandwiches are grilled to perfection and they serve it with a yummy side of tomato soup & a small green salad. We shared the Heywood (according to the cashier the most popular) & it was certainly a great sandwich! And they are super generous with the cheese!!!! Now there might be some of you like me that feels guilty for wolfing down an entire sandwich (coronary blockage anyone?) so they even have options of 1/2 sandwiches. They're also gluten-free friendly & dairy-free friendly!!! Anyone in the mood for comfort food this is the place, it caters to everyone right in the heart of hipsterville.....YUM!!!!!

Normally, I'm not a fan of fake cheese but there are two exceptions -- nachos and grilled cheese -- where I find it is an acceptable nostalgic substitute for the plastic cheese products mom used to use when preparing these when I was a kid (Velveta, Kraft Singles). They have two vegan grilled cheese options on the menu. The vegan cheese here definitely has that familiar plastic feel, but is rounded out nicely with high quality bread and toppings. The sandwiches come with soup and salad, but the soup isn't normally vegan, so be sure to ask for extra salad in its place if you are concerned. When we went today, they were experimenting with a new vegan tomato soup in the kitchen that may one day make it to the menu. They let us try some and it was very good. Portions are a little bit on the large side and priced appropriately.

  • Joy S.

The grilled cheese was delicious! But NO bathroom for paying customers?! Whaaat?! Gotta go next door to the cake shop that closes at 8p. So get there before 8pm. Some friends told us afterwards that we had gone into a "bad" neighborhood, but it didn't seem bad to us. Just don't try to go around the block if you pass it. Turning right puts you onto a steep, twisty, windy side street up the mountain.

  • Jessica T.

I used to come here a lot about a year ago, honestly for the tomato soup. It was creamy and basil-y and I would order a full bowl to go with my sandwich knowing it already came with a small dipper portion. But now it just tastes like hot salty tomato water. Disappointing. I had the Heywood with it and added short rib, which was a fine sandwich but the meat ended up overpowering the cheesy goodness, so it was more like I ordered a barbecue sandwich and added a little cheese. The only good thing about this overpriced meal was that I was fed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

  • Ari R.

A pretty cool spot. The employees are all really great and I like the simple menu. The flavor of the sandwiches is good. They just don't have much cheese in them. (See my photo!) They weren't very filling. Maybe they should call the place "Heywood: A Grilled Bread Shoppe"! Hello, for ten dollars, make it cheesy! Do this, clean your windows and get rid of the junky signs in front, and I'll be back!

After patiently waiting for what seems like forever...Heywood is finally open and my neighborhood feels complete. Nothing beats a really well done grilled cheese (complete with caramelized onion confit) and tomato soup...unless said meal also includes a black & white cake monkey and a BOTTLED coke (hello sugar cane). I'll admit, my lady friends and I were a bit eager on the gun and got the first batch of grilled cheese on opening day - but why procrastinate on spoiling your taste buds? We got the following: 2 originals, 2 Heywoods, 1 huckleberry soda, 1 root beer, 1 perrier, 1 cake monkey and one s'mores fudge thingy. The grilled cheeses were perfect! Good ratio of butter:bread:cheese - enough time on the grill for crunchy goodness and the onion confit really just added a sweetness to the sharp cheese. Each sandwhich comes with a nice little mixed green salad as well. The service was friendly and quick - very smiley (but not in an ostentatious kind of way). They just played some good music and added to the already adorable atmosphere. Will be coming back frequently. I want to be "that" regular customer.

I'm a huge grilled cheese fan, but I'm not really into the Grilled Cheese truck, so thanks Heywood, for opening. Just for me. I've had the "Not Quite a Classic" several times already and it's pretty much my everything. I've also shared the dessert grilled cheese (sorry, forgot the name), but it's on a raisin bread with brie, and ohmygod. I have no words! I probably couldn't eat a whole dessert grilled cheese on my own, but it's delicious. I also think its great that each sandwich is served with a side salad and a lil cup of vegan tomato soup (although I would like Campbells more, but that's just me!) The thick bread is ridiculous and the fancy cheese is so good. WORTH IT!

Food is great but they always close early despite claiming they are open til 3am. If you head over here after 2am for a grilled cheese theres a good chance they will have randomly closed early.. Please just indicate when you will be open til and stick with it.

This place is a hidden gem in Silverlake. The decor is very hip, warm and welcoming. The staff was super friendly. I ordered a Caprese grill cheese. I loved the presentation. The sandwich tasted amazing and even better when dipped in their delicious tomato soup which comes with every sandwich! You also get a small mixed green salad. The only thing that wasn't awesome was the smores dessert. They don't make them so I can't fault Heywood, but I wouldn't recommend it. With their hot grills Heywood could easily make their own hot and fresh smores type sandwich. I can dream can't I? Definitely plan on coming back and turning people on to this great place! Thanks again!

The guys behind the counter? Very cute hipsters. The food? Maybe because I was walking home after a club, but it was a resounding DELICIOUS. Who else is going to be open that late at night -after a club? And offer you comfort food? Gourmet presentation and style...that early in the morning?

We were recommended to this place by my daughter's co-worker who knows one of the owners. If you are a grilled cheese lover or just a lover of cheese....you have to try them. We had the Muy Caliente and Bon Appetite Brie. They were both very good. I love hot and spicy so I was hoping Muy Caliente was going to be hotter but it was still very yummy. Both of the sandwiches were grilled just perfectly and very buttery. They don't skimp on the cheese either. The tomato soup they give you to dip your sandwich into was also delicious.

This is a really cute place . Small, tucked in a window of a shop. However, it is really quite an oasis. I can't give it 5 stars, but maybe that's just because I love cheese too much to concede that it should only be melted on bread. But if there were a place to try this idea out, it'd be here! My choice: half a Heywood. Which is English Cheddar (aged) on sourdough with caramelized onions. With a side of tomato soup (for dipping really) and salad, this is really enough of a meal. restaurant pros: Good variety and distinction between cheeses and even vegan cheeses and additions of the vegetable or cheese variety. The options for breads are good. The tomato bisque is really fantastic and should always be tried with sandwiches here. restaurant cons: The variety stops at cheese and vegetables and bread. That's it. Which is good, if that's what you want. The space is tiny. The bread is often served a bit on the very well done side... My experience. I watched many peoples' orders come out nearly so dark they could have been black. This left a distinctive flavor on the palette and in the air. I think the quality of the bread stood out sorely for me on the Heywood I received. I was not a big fan. Overall 3.875/5*: I will be back, but I'll have to be in the mood for the space. I can see where grilled cheese lovers would really enjoy this place (in fact, I love good grilled cheese, and can have it any time), but when you go through the trouble of making a restaurant devoted to it you should look at the larger picture and offer the quality not just in the cheese but everything that goes with it. I admit, they did it right with the tomato soup, but that's about all the good I saw in variety outside of cheese.

I may be a bit biased since I used to work here, but I'm leaving LA soon and I'm sure going to miss this place. The food is amazing. There are so many ways to switch it up between the menu items and the build your own sandwich option. My coworkers were awesome, and our customers and surrounding business employees all make the scene great here:)

muy caliente not quite a "classic" with maplewood smoked bacon thick slices of buttered bread generous, ooey cheese blanket the other ingredients heated up just enough for that satisfying crunch when you bite in. side serving of a simple salad and simple dressing with a small bowl of tomato soup you can dip the sandwich in or scoop it up with a spoon. p and i agreed it wasn't the most fancy grilled cheese sandwichs but definitely made well and thoroughly enjoyable at the very least.

Add something else to your grilled cheese, like tomato! Holy crap! a Grilled Cheese Shop? effen Brilliant! Gruyer and some kind of weird swiss I can't even spell. Wow, I am so glad I atleast tried one so far, I haven't swithced it up yet, so far I am addicted to the tres truffle shuffle. Anyhow I just wish they served beer, The other day I had my griller to go and paired it with a Guiness........WOW

The grilled cheese is delicious. I had doubts about the Caprese, but they were blown away as soon as I bit into it. Will gladly come back again to try the others! Not sold on the soup. It seems to have red pepper in it, and the bitter capsicum-skin flavor really overpowers the tomato.
